I am 45, 5'-9" 170lbs. I have been having the problem of frequent urge
to urinate for about 4 years. The problems of waking up in the middle
of the night started about 2 1/2 years ago. I went to see my general
practician and he proscibed flomax which I took for 30 days and seemed
to help. I stopped for 6 months and went to a urologist. The urologist
said I do not have an enlarged prostate and my psa is low so he does
not know what my problem is but I should go back to flomax since it
helped. I have been taking it for 6 months and I am not sure it is
having any effect. I still feel like I need to urinate about every 1
1/2 during the day though I frequently hold it for 3 hours and I am
awaked at night every 3 or 4 hours with the need to go.
Any suggestions I would like to get off flomax but Im afraid my
condition will get worse if I stop. Also how can I find a local
urologist that considers options other than drugs and surgury and
talks about your diet, exercise and supplements?

Flomax has a subtle effect and it is not always clear it is helping.
You need to judge it over time.

"Proscribed' means ruled out, denounced. You probably mean prescribed.

You can ask your doc for the name of an alternative practitioner.
That's what I did.

I went to an intro session where these guys outlined their approach...
I guess they are required by law to do this. They bad-mouthed western
medicine saying the meds and techniques are not proven, then spouted
about their traditional herbs and acupuncture that they just believed
in, but which are for the most part much less proven. They just don't
have data to show what works. They are not even interested in getting
this data. I was very disappointed. There are good modern studies on
things like lycopene but they are not interested in that. I never went
back.

Obviously if your doc doesn't know what is up with you, we won't know
either, but you might want to consider going for another opinion.

Hi tmc

I had your problem over twelve years ago and it was due to allergies.  My
first allergic response was a runny nose, sneezing and itching eyes.  When
that stopped it was frequent urination and it is still that way today.  You
talk to a doctor about the problem and they think you are nuts.  I have
gotten better but it has been through my own efforts using alternative
treatments.

A little over two years ago I had PVP and that allowed me to have a good
stream again as the prostate was closing the urethra. (150 grams)   However,
the surgery did nothing for the frequent urination problem because the
prostate was not the problem in the first place.
