I've always tried to keep up on men's health issues. I have a check up
at least once a year and request the PSA test. My last test gave me a
good reading of 3.3.
I convinced a friend to have the test. His Dr is concerned. The test
came back 8.8. They want him to take another test a week to confirm this
reading.
He is worried and asking my advice. I pushed him to take the test.
Is this a very high reading? He is in 60s,
Could this entail meds. and/or surgery,
Btw: I've been taking Hytrin for 7 years for enlarged prostate and it's
working very well for me. I'm now up to 6mg a day from a start of 2mg. I
find I only need to get up once in the night.
Appreciate any advice

A PSA of 8.8 seems high, and that means something is bugging the
prostate, or the prostate is big. (Big prostates make more PSA.) So
that should be investigated. Could be cancer, or prostatitis, or too
much riding a bicycle.
The doc will probably be interested in doing a DRE (digital
examination). And maybe a biopsy is in the works if the PSA is
confirmed.
Actually, PSA values are all over the place. My uro says it's not the
value of the PSA but the trend. One week does not establish a trend,
though.
I think that doing PSAs just for screening someone who does not have
any other relevant symptoms is not recommended these days. It can
scare perfectly healthy people, and maybe lead to unnecessary tests.
But now that he has had it done, better follow through.
