Having had TUMT and PVP over the last couple of years, I have been still
having some problems with urgency and frequency. URO diagnosed "over
active bladder." Earlier, I did not want to try medications to help the
disorder since they were not approved by the FAA and could jeopardize my
Third Class medical certificate. A recent review of the AOPA online
regarding FAA medications shows some changes pilots with bph and over
active bladder should be aware. Detrol, Enablex, and Vesicare are
approved with these notes: Detrol and Enablex require "status report
and no adverse side effects." Vesicare has a "30 day wait after
starting drug with a detailed status report from the treating
physician." I have been on Detrol LA for about 2 weeks and find that
it does seem to lengthen the time period between urges and make the
frequency issues are less noticable. Others with the disorder might
want to talk to their UROs and AMEs regarding a trial of one of these
medications.

Just curious Hugh...what side effects are you having? The Detrol LA
seems to be working. I haven't noticed any side effects after being on
it about 3 weeks...It appears to be helping the urgency and frequency
issues.

Many urologists in the UK have found that prescribing a short course of
a low dose tricyclic antidepressant each night eg.Amitryptiline or
Imipramine, can effectively and permanently relieve the symptoms of an
overactive bladder with few side effects.
