at the age of 36 I injured my back shortly afterwards I started going into
urinary retension every few days to weeks.

after about a year and trying every drug known to man I had a bladder neck
incission and things settled down. ?<For about 4 years.

Now I get sever bladder neck spasms which refuse to go away despite every
drug known to my urologist being tried.

I now have to self cathiterise four times daily as I am unable to pass any
urine

I now take morphine for the pain but still collapse with severe pain at time
on my last visit to hospital I was told you have no feeling in your bladder
neck and therefore can feel no pain there

Any help or advice would be gratefully accepted.

ps. i am in the uk

Is the pain from having a full bladder?  Where do you feel the pain?

P.S. I had a TUIP two years ago and so far it has helped me a lot. I
am now 52.The drugs never really helped me. BTW: Morphine will
increase your chances of retaining urine.

There are other muscles down there that do have pain receptors. As
well as glands that also feel pain. What about PSA and DRE? Exactly
what does your urologist say about the pain?

He said that the pain was probably caused by the nerve damage in my back and
any further treatment to my bladder would not be of any real benifit.

He also feels that treatment of symptoms is the best way forward for this
moment in time and any further surgery would not be of benifit and would only
consider surgery as a last resort.

Visits to A&E tend to produce a mixed response of sympathy or pull yourself
together the pain cant be that bad I only need morphine after having the
spasms for about an hour . buscopan iv relives the spasm quite well the real
pain seems to start when the spasm stops and it is one almighty ache and
sickness is present during both phases of the attack. I take the morphine
when I need it but prefer to do without it when I can. Can you use full names
dre psa etc as i am new to the forum and the termanology is somewhat new to
me

If we used the full terminology for some such as PSA (Prostate-Specific
Antigen) most would not know what we are talking about.  DRE (digital
rectal examination) most of us know all about.  Both of course are
methods of testing for Prostate Cancer and full descriptions can be
found on the web.  Do a Google on them.

Where are you located?  How many doctors have you consulted?

yes prostate is in perfect condition

both tests ok

I have seen at least 7 doctors from urologists neurologistd orthapedic and
anyone else in between I thought may have an opinion.

I am in the uk

I just seem to be going through a rough patch at the moment where I cannot
walk very far without triggering the pain and also just need reassurance I
think as I cant understand why the pain is so severe when it starts. I also
suffer from ulcerative colitus and at the moment one complaint seems to be
triggering the other

I am not a doctor, but  I AM a Certified Health Nut, and I have cured
myself of rheumatoid arthritis. Check Wikipedia and Google for further
info or ask here if you don't understand my advice.

I believe you when you say you have REALLY BAD nerve pain. Morphine is
not very good at controlling nerve pain. Guess what is? Pot! See if
your doc will give you a prescription. I've heard that the street
version is better, though.

I agree with your surgeon. Don't have any more surgery until you've
exhausted the other options.

Regarding your Ulcerative Colitis, I would bet that you haven't had a
Celiac Panel to rule out that you don't in fact have Celiac Disease,
which will absolutely screw you up. It is called "the Great Impostor".
If you have Celiac Disease you will have to eliminate gluten from your
diet. Ulcerative colitis is an EXTREME inflammatory condition. Get the
book from your library "The Anti-Inflammation Zone" by Dr. Barry
Sears. Follow his program.

If you are overweight, lose weight. If you smoke, STOP. If you drink,
drink dry red wine.

Good Luck, Please let me know if this helps.

Are you in London?

Sincerely,  BlackHawk

Others addressed the acronyms besides it sounds like it is not a
urological issue. Have any of the doctors, talked about epidural
steroid injections in your back? Depending on the type of nerve damage
these injections might reduce the nerve irritation reducing pain and
maybe helping with retention. It really helps with my neck problems.
Most likely it would be mentioned by a neurosurgeon, neurologist or
pain specialist. At least you should look into treating the pain. You
really need to go to a pain clinic or see a pain specialist about
this. Only a pain specialist will adequately address pain management.
Try posting in alt.support.chronic-pain. Someone there might be
familiar with your problem.

I still deal with retention as well. My problem is related to spinal
cord compression in my neck. I do not have pain issues down below,
just stream and retention problems. The TUIP really helped me with
that and the injections and other treatments help with pain. I hope
this helps.

Anytime. Just email or post to this newsgroup or the
alt.support.chronic-pain newsgroup. I am not a doctor nor am I an
expert. I draw on my knowledge and experience to help. Many others do
likewise.

Happy Christmas!
