I would like to have the opinions of this newsgroup on what is the best medicine to shrink an enlarged prostate ? I was put on Proscar about 1.5 years ago and it seems to have worked okay. Before I had episodes of acute retention (not fun) but not any more. Still have to take Flomax though. Side effects have been minimal to none. I'm wondering if Avodart would be better... Ed Ed I was on Proscar for two years, several years back, couldn't tell if it really helped me or not. I have also had three episodes of acute urinary retention which I had a PVP and that has taken care of it so far. I've now just started on Avodart so I can't speak for it yet but I'm hopeful that it will slow down the growth of my prostate. Avodart works in two different ways as Proscar just one way so Avodart may be better but I guess time will tell. Has Proscar decreased the size of your prostate any? Dean, Well, nobody has looked inside at the prostate to check its size recently, but the PSA went down to about half of what it was before, so I think we can surmise that the prostate has shrunk from 150 to about 120 g (this from what it has done generally for others in similar situations). Proscar doesn't usually change symptoms much. Its benefit is that it might help a little, and stops the progression to ever larger prostate with ever worse symptoms. Ed |
