I had pretty well decided that a PVP procedure was the way to go to
eliminate my problems. Went to the Doc for his opinions and he said
his opinion is, this should be a last resort. He prescribed Proscar
for long time prostrate shrinkage and Hytrin to increase flow.
Are there any opinions on the group regarding this therapy ? I bascially
dislike drugs of any kind, I have been forced to be on Plavix 'forever'
an hate to add two more, but if the end results are good, I suppose it
beats surgery. Am looking for any input anyone would care to share.
Thanks ! !

I'm on both Hytrin and Proscar. The Hytrin helps me pee. I'm miserable
without it. I have been taking the Proscar because two urologists told me
it will reduce the size of my very large prostate (150+ grams) prior to the
PVP that I will have done at the end of this month. I was told that Proscar
will reduce the amount of bleeding that will occur during the PVP operation.
Both drugs have deleterious side effects. Hytrin makes me sleepy and slows
down my thinking. I just noticed that I'm starting to grow man tits. I'm
slim (178 pounds / 6 foot) and never had them until after I was on Proscar.
I plan to get off both these drugs after my PVP operation at the end of this
month.

There are recent reports that Proscar causes cancer
Also it sure causes retro
and if you have middle lobe enlargement it does not work
If you have any degree of osteoporosis its equally bad

Gary I have used Proscar for about 12 years and it started to work in a
much shorter time than my Dr. statement it might take 90 or more days. At
about the same time I started on a low dose coated aspirin, 81mg and, at one
point tried Hytrin because it was also effective for high blood pressure but
it gave me headaches. Went back to Proscar, continued with the aspirin and
for several years now have taken meds for blood pressure and cholestero with
no noticeable effects from the multiple drugs.
Others on this site have not had the desired results with Proscar and I have
often wondered why. It was the answer for me - no urgency, up once a nite
instead of 3 and 4 times etc. I am 74 years old.

Easy answer, everyone is different and every one here has different
results from taking Proscar or any other treatment.
In my own case, after several months of taking Proscar it was
determined that it had shrunk my prostate as it should have but very
little and my symptoms showed no improvement at all.
Glad it worked for you, wish it had for me.
