I had a bad experience with Ciprofloxacin when trekking in Nepal. My head
swelled like a balloon, apparently cipro greatly increases photo-sensitivity
of the skin in some people and thin air and harsh sunlight did for me, so I
shared your concerns about antibiotics after surgery, especially as I am
also very allergic to penicillin. My uro laughed when I told him and said
I'd be fine and he would be giving me cipro, and I was ok. I understand
your worry but I think antibiotics are essential after surgery and if you
are in England you'd be mad not to take them, as MRSA is endemic in most of
our hospitals. So best wishes for tomorrow, I'm sure you'll be fine.
We discussed antibiotic reactions in a thread on this NG last year and I
showed a picture of myself showing the 'elephant man' reaction I suffered.

Thanks Clyde and Huw for your responses. I'm sitting here on the bed
of my motel room in beautiful Santa Barbara, relaxing before my PVP,
which is scheduled for tomorrow morning. And I'm so very grateful for
the support of you guys, and of others in this group.
I even sent an email to our beloved Dr.Sancha, patron saint of this
group. I told him of my quandary about antibiotics, and he responded
the very next morning, just in time for my pre-op meeting with Dr.
Laub.
The meeting with Dr. Laub, which I had been dreading, went wonderfully.
I was afraid that he'd make light of my concern about antibiotics, as
your doctor did, Huw. But he was very understanding. He said he
wouldn't do surgery without antibiotics, but he he said that he would
only give me a single dose of Levaquin before the operation, and not
prescribe any for after.
So I'm feeling much more relaxed about things at the moment. Dr. Laub
and his assistant really put me at ease, and the pre-op volunteers at
Cottage Hospital were extremely kind.
Can't believe I'm really here and about to have this procedure in a
little more than 12 hours, after years of hanging around this newsgroup
and reading about everyone else's.
I hope to have good news to report soon!
