is it common or advised to take some type of strong pain reliever -
like morphine - just before having a biopsy ? i know they use
lidocaine, but it seems most find biopsies uncomfortable -- i am
wondering why most uros dont give pain medication prior to the
procedure --

I am having one Monday. I think I may just depend on the lido., and
take a tranquilizer. I do have some Vicodin and may take that instead.
From what I have read, they don't feel the pain is intense enough to
warrant more than lidocaine injection. But then again, years ago they
only used lidocaine gel.

Hi: I had one last month, with 6 samples taken. I hardly felt a thing.
They numbed the prostate in two places, and waited about 20 minutes to
do the biopsy. Whatever they used did the trick, because I had no pain
what-so-ever. There was a little soreness the next day, but I didn't
need any pain reliever. I had no bleeding afterward during urination
that was visible either. BTW my insurance paid the complete bill for my
Cigna in network doctor, but the Cigna non-network ultra-sound
consultant and lab are trying to bill me for a $1000.00. I was never
informed about any non-network procedures, so I will fight them on
that. Good luck with your biopsy. Corky

Rich,
I had a 7-core prostate biopsy in November of 2000.  Before the biopsy,
my urologist applied Lidocaine gel to a gloved finger, inserted it
into my rectum, and applied the gel to my prostate. He waited 10
minutes and then did the biopsy. I felt very little pain.

Before I scheduled the biopsy, I told my urologist that I was terribly
anxious about the procedure, which led him to prescribe an anti-anxiety
medication, either Valium or Xanax (I can't remember which). I filled
the prescription and decided an hour before my biopsy appointment that
I would not take my anti-anxiety medication.

As soon as I placed myself on the examining table, he turned on some
classical music which continued until he finished. The music helped me
relax and his gentle manner and sensitivity to my feelings also helped.

Had one today. Uro injected lidocaine in 2 areas, just a little
discomfort. The probe looked like a long dildo, but actually was quite
tolerable. He took 12 samples. Sounded like a freakin staple gun and
felt like a strong rubber band hitting. I am sure i jumped a few
times. Two hrs later there is aching in the area, but not too bad.
Took some Tylenol. Prior I took .5 Xanax and I would recommend this.
It really took the edge off, and I was not even sweating, and did not
even care about wiping the gobs of lube up with the nurse in the room
cleaning up.

I go for mine today.  The Radiologists do them here.  Hopefully they are
gentle.  For the colonoscopies at least they put me to sleep.  Hate having
things shoved up where they don't belong.

Rich, pain killer really not necessary, maybe motrin afterward if
needed, however you should be on an antibiotic, such as Cipro.
