I had a PVP last week with Dr. Lin.  Everything went well and I am doing good
so far.  However, after the procedure while I was in the post op recovery
room,  I asked the nurse if I could have a bowel movement and sit up in the
recliner in the room.  She said no problem.  So I did as I asked.

Ten minutes later Dr Lin came in and he was upset.  He said I should not be
sitting up because of the catheter and that I was putting pressure on my
prostate.  And he was right, my relatively clear water had become bloody.   I
ended up spending the night with catheter rather than being discharges at 4:
00 PM.

So be sure to ask the doctors and to have advocate with you who can look
after your interests while you are still groggy.

I am pleased with my PVP.  Frequency/urgency has stopped.  Clear stream,
strong most of the time, except when I have an occassional urge to without
anything in my bladder.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the caution.  I'm gonna have a PVP next week with Dr. Laub.
Just so I'll be prepared: If Dr. Lin didn't want you to sit up, how
were you supposed to have your bowel movement?

Thanks,
Bruce

Probably should not need to have one if you have not eaten for several
hours.  I was not allowed to have anything after the previous evening.
I was allowed clear liquid up until about four hours before the PVP.

I was happy they did not require an enema or laxative!!

Got it.  But you evidently DID need to have one.  What did the good
doctor want you to do? Hold it in?  Move your bowels lying down? Is
that even possible?

No, l did not need a bm.   I had not eaten since 12 pm the night before.  I
was dopey from the anesthesia and felt pressure from the balloon on the
catheter.   I guess they have bed pans for lying down, but I did not need to
use one after all.

Well on 06/06/06, I had a TURP to clean out a load of residual Scar
Tissue (from a mega-blast HDR Brachytherapy July 2005.)

Whilst I was under Irrigation for 24 hrs post op., I spasmed up due to
Constipation, and after a couple of syringes into the catheter, the
male nurse gave me some Sorbitol Laxative to shift the load. Within 5
mins. I was farting loudly and 1/2 hour, I cast a Turd about 12" long
in the Ward Toilet. I had to waddle there with all my Apparatus, but
the Irrigation flow resumed immediately. Only a couple of Blood Clots
in the tube.

I'm just recovering to pissing without pain this week and have managed
a couple of longish road trips without disaster LOL.
