I tried to be accepted for a PVP. My URO measured my prostate and said
it was too big(127 gms). He wants me to go on avodart for 4 mos to try
to shrink it to 100 gms or less so he can do the procedure. Ive been on
avodart for over a month and I dont feel any improvement. Has anyone
out there had the same experience . Does avodart eventually shrink the
prostate? Can the prostate be too big to do a PVP? Thanks Cameron

Dr Lin, in St Augustine, FL., did my prostate and it was 150 grams. He said
the big ones just take longer. Mine took 2 hours whereas a small one takes
an hour or less.
In case you would wonder--I have had no retro.

Cam,
In theory, the effectiveness of Avodart depends on your level of
bioavailable testosterone (T). The higher your T level, the more
effective the Avodart will be.

While many doctors will limit the size of the prostate that they will use
the PVP procedure for, two doctors that I know of have performed the PVP
procedure on prostates larger than 185 gms. Dr Lin at Flager Hospital in
St. Augustine Florida and Dr Te, at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and the
Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. They are located around East
66 to 68 St. in the city

My prostate shrunk from 110 to 85 cc (cc approximately equal to gm) in
about 6 mos. It does not work for all men. Sometimes it takes up to a
year, one eminent urologist wrote.
Another issue: my medical oncologist (who specializes in prostate
cancer) had me increase my dose from 0.5 to 1.0 mg because the Avodart
did not sufficiently lower my dihydrotestosterone (measured by a blood
test). My urologist prescribes 0.4 mg Flomax for me; recently he told
me to double my dose.
