BPH and prostatis

I am wondering if there are others with the same symptoms that I have been
having. I am a 69 year old male with BPH.  My urologist and I are watching.
Have been for almost 7 years or more.  About a year ago I began having a
little burning upon urination.  Most of the time things were normal.  The
symptoms were intermittent so that they would be absent or mild most of the
time with a day or 3 when they would be worse.

Recently the burning has gotten worse and seems to be related to a swelling
of the prostate although I do not know this for a fact.  The problem is that
when the burning is bad I have an urge to urinate when the bladder is not
full but it is hard to tell how full it is.  I had an episode last night
where this was the case.  Couldn't sleep and couldn't pee. I finally was
able to go a little but was up and down numerous times.  Come morning the
burning was still present but I could pee better and this continued during
the day. Walking around seems to help.  This has happened once before but
not as bad as this time.  The burning is always there but most of the time
is isn't bad enough to cause any problem. I have tried to find a correlation
between food (salt) (acid)  (coffee) (alcohol)  but there doesn't seem to be
one although I am still not sure. I am pretty sure there is no bacterial
problem because this has been checked and my urine is clear.

Has anyone else had similar problems.  After last night I am thinking of
finding a Doctor in the Fayetteville NC area that does PVP. It is very scary
when you have to pee and can't.  Any suggestions?

It is typically harder to pee at night. If you wake up and can't pee,
it helps (for me) to allow time to wake up. Turn on the light, walk a
bit maybe. Not what you want to do at 3 in the morning, I know, but if
you don't pee a good amount, you will be up again in an hour and it
might be worse then. Well, that's my experience anyway. I even go to
the trouble of measuring the amount I pee, because sometimes it feels
like I've peed a river and it turns out it was only a dribble. So I
pee into a bottle and don't go back to bed until it's the right amount
(determined from experience).

It can be helpful to have a snack before retiring. Potato chips or
such junk food helps to retain water, so you pee less at night. Pizza
works great. Doesn't always work but usually it helps. But be careful,
don't go to dry -- possible risk of kidney stones... also that food is
fattening and obesity is not good.

If you are having serious burning, that might indicate prostatitis.

Ed,
Excellent post. Do you think that it might be a Urinary Tract Infection?
I agree that it's more likely to be prostatitis.

I have experienced this a number of times.  A good treatment is to
fill up the bathtub with fairly warm water and lie down in it for a
while.  This is usually enough to relax the bladder neck and allow you
to pee more completely.  Walking around also helps.

Best,

Dave,  for the most part it sounds like the syptoms I had when I had
prostatitis a few years ago.  Another major symptom, which you do not
mention, is that I almost always felt like I needed to have a bowel
movement, but had difficulty doing so and never fully emptied out.  I
think it is the swelling of the prostate against the rectum that causes
that.  My GP at the time recommended 4 ejaculations per day
(seriously!) to help clear up the prostate.  I was unable to achieve
that lofty rate, but I did feel better after an ejaculation (oh, and my
symptoms were reduced too).  Currently, at 4 weeks post-PVP, I am
having many of the same symptoms, and am starting to wonder if the
irritation from the procedure has led to a new case of prostatitis.  I
think it is just part of the normal healing process though.  One
difference is that, after the PVP, when I pee, half-empty bladder or
not, middle of the night or not, I start immediately and empty
completely.

Have you tried drinking a glass of cranberry juice each day? I visited the
health food store and found a product called "D-Mannose Powder". The label
states that it is a "simple sugar that occurs natually in some plant,
including cranberries". I have tried it and it appeared to help. However,
I am sure that prescription medicines work better. I try to avoid taking
prescription medications unless the natural things do not solve the
problem.
