I'm new to this board, but in need of info. I had Greenlight PVP on Jan 10
and was optimistic that the procedure would cure my BPH problems. I was
getting up 3 to 4 times every night despite my being on .4 and the later .8
mg of Flomax. The Flomax helped for several years until about 6 months ago.
The PVP procedure was performed as an oupatient and I was in and out of the
hospital in about 6 hours. I removed the catheter on the morning of the 2nd
day without any apparent problems except the sudden need to urgently urinate
frequently. (I was drinking a lot of water so I was not surprised too much. I
also was not surprised to see some blood in my urine - at least for the next
several days. In accordance with the doc's instructions I remained on .4 mg
of Flomax, and was on an antibiotic for the 1st week. The urgency to urinate
gradually subsided over the next week, and the appearance of blood became
most evident at the end of the stream with a pinkish tinge. However I was
still getting up about 3 times each night to urinate. It is now the 26 Jan,
some 16 days after the procedure. About a week ago the blood increased and
now was at the beginning of the stream. Although on the Flomax, I'm still
awakening at night. I've also noticed on 2 occasions during the past several
days a small clot of about 1/4" in size. I'm experiencing no pain, no
temperature, but pinkish to light red blood shows up in my urine. And I've
yet to benefit from the PVP procedure.
Am I being too optimistic? (Before the procedure the urologist stated that he
had performed this >200 times and has yet to have any say they were sorry to
have it done) Comments?

It took me 3 months to fully recover from PVP.......results have been
overall OK........ but nothing like Laserscopre suggests.

It takes time for most people to benefit/recover from the procedure. I
basically stopped passing blood at the beginning of urination after about
ten days.I passed only one clot about the size of a raisin but sometimes had
little bits that looked like flakes of chipped red paint. My sense of
urgency continued off and on for several weeks but the time between needing
to urinate during the day could be up to five hours and after two weeks my
retention was less than 100mls.My flow gradually improved each week and is
now 19mls/sec (was 11mls/sec) and retention 80mls (was 390mls) at week 26.
You should still keep your liquid intake up, I was probably overdoing it at
about 3.5 litres a day for the first five weeks. However much you drink you
will pass at least that much urine a day. I found that half of my output was
during the night. Even when I cut my liquid intake back to 2.5 litres I
still had to get up three times in the night but was passing up 400/500mls
at a time rather than the 200mls prior to the procedure.I am now getting up
twice in the night, that may be due to taking the Thiazide diuretic
prescribed for my hypertension in the early evening rather than in the
morning. My urologist and his nurse both said that 1.5 litres a day is
sufficient liquid intake but now way will I ever get it under 2 litres.

Thanks guys, I agree the hype regarding the recovery time had been overdone.
Even when I had asked the urologist: how long before I'd experience the
benefits? - he indicated it may be right away - like days. I'd feel a lot
better, and have less anxiety about this if I was given the hard facts prior
to having the PVP performed. I'd still do it, but at least know more about
what to expect. Now, I'm getting a better idea from you - those of you that
have been there. . . thanks again, RHem

For many, me for one, recovery was a snap.  Yes I had some blood for a
few weeks and a little burn for a few days, and a slight pulling
sensation at the end of peeing - but the results were immediate and
enduring.  Cath out in 12 hours and from that moment on had an amazing
stream.  For me everything exceeded what I expected and what the
Laserscope site said.

There are many factors, your general health going in, the condition of
your plumbing (ie how much damage did you do to it before deciding on
surgery), the skill of your doctor, other urinary tract problems besides
BPH.

Some posters to this NG "Forlorn Hope" and Derry Argue had almost instant
success from their procedures. I was quite happy to slowly improve after ten
years with a growing prostate. I had absolutely no pain after the procedure
and no discomfort after the second day. The more instant success stories
seem to have come from patients with smallish prostates that caused severe
obstruction/retention in quite a short time.

I had my PVP done on January 12. After 10 days from the procedure, I started
noticing small amount of blood, that varies from one time to another, at the
beginning of the stream then it would clear.  Sometimes It would subside
during the night but return during the day. On occasions, small clots come
out.  In addition, I'm getting a burning sensation every time at the end.
Every day I would hope it would go away but it has not. This is the 5th week
after the procedure and what I'm experiencing is totaly contrary to what I
was told and read about this PVP procedure. I will see my uro early next week.
Please keep us updated.
