Symptoms After the Prostate Biopsy

I had a prostate biopsy 21 days ago and was diagnosed with Chronic
Prostatitis.  No cancer.  I'm 50.  First had PSA of 5.26 which, after
antibiotics, went down to 4.6.  Doctor said he wanted to do biopsy to
rule out cancer.  The ultrasound biopsy showed that my prostate
measured 34cm.

Since the biopsy, I have the following symptoms:

1. Still have blood in my ejaculate then difficult to urinate for next
couple of days.  I have only ejaculated 5 times since biopsy.  Also,
orgasm feels kind of weird (not painful but almost feelingless)
2. NO blood in urine whatsoever
3. Intermittent weak stream (which I also had before the biopsy)
4. Some discomfort before urination
5. Some discomfort after bowel movement
6. Rare feeling of urgency

Went back to urologist for follow up one week after biopsy and my urine
was 100% clear.  He put me on non-sterioidal anti-inflammatory for a
week and my urine stream increased nicely.  However, once off of the
meds, urination seems difficult almost every time.  Also feel like I
have to urinate when there's really nothing there.

Doctor says he's going to put me on prostate reduction meds (?) but
hasn't done so yet.

Anyone have similar experiences, suggestions?

Thanks!

I should add that the doctor took 10 samples (5 from each side)

Lowell...who did your biopsy (ie the uro or someone else like a
radiologist)...Pete

My urologist actually did the biopsy.

BTDT, 2X. #1 & #2 & #3 were same for me. Not the others. Remember, the
uro is punching holes through the bowel wall to get to the prostate.
It's possible you have a small infection. Ask him about ABX if you
think that may be a possibility. When I had mine, he prescribed
Levaquin the day of the biopsy and for two days after. He also gave me
a shot in the a.s with some other ABX when I had my a.s in the breeze
waiting to start.
FWIW
YMMV
I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV.

What is ABX?   I had Levaquin for 2 days before through the day after
the biopsy.  Also got a shot in the a.s.
Today, actually, I seem to be urinating better.  Seems to be more
difficult at night but that seems to be getting a little better, too.

I was so freaked out by the sight of blood in my ejaculate that I'm
refraining.  Also refraining because it seems that my ability to
urinate the after ejaculating is diminished greatly that night and
takes a couple of days to improve (still not back to 100% but certainly
better).

ABX is my shorthand for antibiotic. You may have an infection or the
prostate may be swollen a bit from being pincushioned. That will slow
things down. If it doesn't get better soon you'd best contact the uro
for advice. Glad you're feeling better.

hi lowell - since the ABX question has been answered, maybe i can shed
some light on what you are experiencing.

the beginning of the urine stream can be as bright red as if you are
passing pure blood then, it turns into the usual color right away.
this part should go away fairly soon after the biopsy as in a couple of
days.

after the biopsy, the prostate will leak blood inside from the sticks,
so that when you ejaculate, you will have bright red blood color.  now,
this can come as quite a shock for someone who is not told ahead of
time.

it usually takes a couple of weeks before the bright red blood color
turned into brown, then dark brown, and finally the ejaculate will look
like catsup before clearing up.

you can keep up the ejaculation process and clear out the passageways,
but that is up to the individual.

just thought you would want to know the usually process of how it
straightens up.

the other symptoms you have from prostatitis and how the biopsy affects
it, i can only guess at because each is different.  i suspect that the
prostate is somewhat engorged from the blood and this is why you are
feel it during a bowel movement and it would also affect urine flow some
even.

hope this info helps,

Thank you, Curtis.  You have actually eased my mind quite a bit.

I have an appointment with my urologist on Monday morning.  Spoke with
him today (FRiday) and he says that he is going to put me on alpha
blockers to reduce the size of my prostate (it's 34cm whereas normal is
around 20cm).

Thanks again.  Have a wonderful weekend.

Lowell...I think you got your drugs mixed up here.  Alpha blockers are to
relax the muscle in the prostate and bladder neck (which may help you void
better), not to reduce the size per se.  I think you are talking about the
proscar family of drugs...Pete

After my first biopsy I had blood (dark brown eventually) in my semen for
six weeks. When I queeried it with the urologist he said not to worry, dark
meant old blood and it had basically been trapped in the tubes.

Well, things are much better now.  After being on Uroxatral (Alpha
blocker) since Monday (4 doses thus far), my ability to urinate has
improved greatly.  I can't believe the difference!  I feel almost like
a 40 year old again!!  Also, after the doctor chastised me for reacting
to the blood in my ejaculate and thus not ejaculating (he asked how I
expected the blood to go away if I didn't "flush" it out?) I've shut my
eyes and made it happen.  Now the ejaculate is almost completely back
to normal.

Thanks, again, to everyone who responded.  You can't believe how much
of a help you were to me.

I had my biopsy (also negative) about a month ago. I had very little in
terms of urination symptoms before. After the biopsy, I had a lot of
blood in my urine for about a week, and since then things are still not
quite Ok - discomfort, urges, some blood, etc. The doctor says it
happens, not every time, but he's seen patients with worse side
effects. It should get better, gradually.

I had my biopsy done by a doctor with a very good reputation, BTW.

Lowell,

Your symptoms after the biopsy should improve gradually. Each biopsy
produces a small wound and haematoma inside the prostate that causes
inflammation and the symptoms you describe. Just be patient and follow
your uro's advice, it will improve.

All the best,

Hi Fernando,

Thank you (and everyone else who responded).  I saw the doctor this
morning and he explained that the only way to rid myself of the blood
in my ejaculate is to continue to ejaculate.  He also put me on an
Alpha Blocker called Uroxatral to increase and strengthen my urine
flow.  Has anyone had any experience with Uroxatral?

Lowell
