Pete - 18 Dec 2005 22:54 GMT Hi guys...I have pasted a post below from the prostatitis newsgroup (which is almost extinct like I have told you), along with my response. I thought some of you might be interested, and I did try to relate it to BPH as well as prostatitis. I'm sure Spread will read it. It seems we have to be very careful about what we read and what we take (of course) and not just take blind recommendations. I know Ed has cautioned this group about premature opinions or assumptions on things. This kind of relates to the recent thread on ibuprofen, which I have commented on at length.
Now I wonder about beta sitosterol (but I guess it would be okay if you don't already have cancer). And you may not have known that proscar may have the same effect on cancer cells (and I got that out of one of my very good pill books called the "essential guide to presciption drugs" written by a well know pharmacist). Don't count on the doctor that prescribed your proscar telling you that, and I doubt if he even knows it. I'm sure he gives it to you assuming you do not have cancer, but he should caution you that there could be a risk if you do, or if you develop it later.
I am awful sick (the malaise and pain and discomfort in my perinium are unbearable) as I write this guys, and something is eating me alive, and am hanging in there on a thread, with no improvement. If I go to emergency they will just send me home. I am just waiting for the high fever, and I know I have cancer, and the damn doctors can not help me. Take care...Pete

I sounds like you got immediate results (which I doubt since most herbal type remedies can take weeks to months to work). Also rule of thumb is spices are bad for prostatitis, along with coffee alcohol, acids etc. The two items you mentioned (cinnamon, and the apple cider drink with aspartame in it) are quite spicy...Pete
PS - Here is an interesting article I found on a cinnamon prostatitis search.

It says that cinnamon could be bad for prostate cancer because the beta sitosterol in it can encourage the growth of cancer cells, but then it says saw palmetto is good for the prostate, but the active ingredient in saw palmetto for DHT reduction in BPH is beta sitosterol (that's a contradiction). Concentrated beta sitosterol is much more potent than what you get in saw palmetto, and it is highly recommended for BPH in lieu of the drug proscar. I have beta sitosterol (not taking it currently), but never read about the cancer cell problem, but I don't have prostate cancer that I know of. It is also interesting to note that cautions on proscar say that it may also enhance cancer growth if cancer is already there or occurs after starting it (it does not say that it can cause cancer).

Two days in this group, and I'll never sleep the same again. Now I can't trust beta sitosterol? I'm screwed!

FROM KAREN PROSTATE PROBLEMS QUESTION: Please send information! I have had chronic prostatitis for almost 10 years. I am 59. Why do you say to avoid cinnamon if there are prostate problems. Others I have read recommend cinnamon to enhance blood circulation, which should aid the prostate.
ANSWER: Since you didn't give me the context of the answer on prostate issues and cinnamon, I have to assume that I was referring to prostate cancer and not just prostate problems. Cinnamon, as well as the ginsengs, cordyceps, ephedra, epimedium, sarsaparilla and horsetail contain high amounts of a chemical called betasitosterol, which has been shown to encourage the growth of prostate cancer cells. Those suffering from or recovering from prostate cancer should avoid these herbs. Of course, if they encourage the growth of those types of cells, I'd imagine you'd want to avoid them anyway. That's why it's dangerous to self medicate. Just because an herb has certain qualities, (Others I have read recommend cinnamon to enhance blood circulation, which should aid the prostate.) doesn't mean that other considerations can be forgotten.
Pete - 19 Dec 2005 21:34 GMT > Yee God's Pete! Two days in this group, and I'll never sleep the same > again. Now I can't trust beta sitosterol? I'm screwed! Sorry Jeff...Just reporting what the lady said. I don't think I want to start taking it again either (I never really took it for any length of time). I'm not taking anything now except my prilosec, because I'm just too damn sick, like I said. I definitely know I would not take proscar though (never have), because of what I wrote about it.
I will probably do some more searching on beta sitosterol and cancer, and maybe even write Karen (the lady at the "ask the herbalist" site) to ask her about the contradiction in her site between saw palmetto and beta sitosterol.
I wonder where Spread has been (I thought for sure he would have commented on this). Take care.
Pete
Spread_deMocracy - 19 Dec 2005 23:09 GMT Hi, Pete and gang. Sorry, I've been rather busy and away from the NG a while. About Cinnamon. I love it, I add a dash to my coffee or tea on weekends with a bit of honey. I read about cinnamon's supposed positive medicinal benefits a long time ago, re: bacteria and it is supposed to soothe the stomach, too, but I can't say I noticed either. Sources were just herbal-type, anecdotal, testimonials, but I like the spice. When referring to the other stuff, I don't have any stats to offer but I do recall reading about the rise of male breast cancers, but, as I mentioned, I can't find the sources. At the time, it was good enough that I had the basic information to discuss with my doctor and urologist and I used that information as my rationale to stop taking DHY inhibitors approved by FDA. It seems logical that if the prescription meds may be suspect, then less potent forms may also deserve to be suspect. But, until I have hard stats, I don't know. On the other hand, if one is convinced they are enjoying some relief by taking the herbals, then their improved quality of life may be worth the risk? I try to eat as many veggies and fruits as possible to get natural sources of phytoestrogens, (sitosterols). I do take some Saw palmetto but think I'm wasting my money. When you do contact Karen, try to find out about her qualifications and a good solid reference article with reputable studies under controlled conditions, would likely be what I'd look for.
Wishing you the very best.

I already knew about cinnamon being good for assisting in the prevention of type II diabetes, but the cancer stuff was interesting (but may not apply to the prostate -remember Karen the herbalist indicated it is bad for prostate cancer - if she doesn't anwer me in a couple of days I will resend it to her). Did you notice the person who wrote it was a damn shrink - lol .......Pete
