I saw a thread from late 2003 (soon after Avodart hit) regarding the
pros/cons of each with side effect info.

I'm leaning toward Avordart. I take Saw Palmetto occasionally, Flomax
more frequently. My uro is making no recommendation between the two. I
have reasonably severe Urinary Retention which Flomax addresses
incompletely.

Any thoughts/experiences/recommendations would be appreciated.

With either/both is it ok to continue Flomax (or would that become
redundant)?

Thanks in advance.

I have not taken either-but if I did I would get a few weeks of each-may
samples and try it and see if I had any adverse effects...the flomax not
working seems to be either you are not taking enough (maybe  need higher
dosage) or try avordart-which they say shrinks the prostate...

Michael is correct, in my opinion.   Let me add some points to
consider...but you ought to check with your doctor, to be sure of anything
when it comes to meds.    AVODART and Saw Palmetto are trying to do the same
thing, inhibit production of DHT on the theory that if continued long
enough, years, not just several months,  it will slow or reverse the growth
of cells in Prostate.   I'd not take both together.   That's just dangerous,
in my opinion.   One is approved by FDA and the other is supported
extensively by anecdotal information,  and with a few studies-- that I have
not reviewed extensively, so can't comment on the scientific methodology
involved.   As for FLOMAX, it is different.   FLOMAX is an Alpha Blockers...
it lowers blood pressure... and is proven in short term studies to be
efficacious in helping to allow one to urinate while the PROSCAR or AVORDART
is given time to start kicking in.   Let you doctor address your dosage and
don't experiment on your own unless you are certain about the side effects.
I was taking FLOMAX, hated the side effects, switched to Uraxotrol,
(Xatrol), and after a few months still had similar side effects but the
effectiveness started to decrease.   So, I made my own choice and ratcheted
up the dosage to 1 and a half tabs instead of one.   Be sure to CAREFULLY
read the possible negative side effects.   You may just want to opt for the
operation--a piece of cake!-- and save your body the stress of dealing with
the meds and the side effects such as "man boobs" from DHT inhibitors and
from Alpha Blockers potential side effects such as muddled thinking,
retro-ejaculation, restlessness at night, swollen membranes/nasals, etc.

My Urologist gave me a couple of sample bottles of Avodart and I have taken
it for 4 days.  Night before last, I had more difficulty urinating than
before but didn't think much about it.  Last night I almost couldn't urinate
at all.  I really had to force it.  The only thing different is the Avodart,
so I am stopping it.  I don't know for sure what is happening, but after a
couple of days, I will post again and see if it improves.

It has been more than a couple of days, but being off Avordart has helped.
I don't have to force urination as I did while taking it.  I don't want to
take that again.

Don,   >>>Last night I almost couldn't urinate at all.  I really had to force
it. <<<  I can understand your situation because I had been the same many
times when I missed taking Flomax.  I took Cardular, Flomax and Proscar for
many years and Advodart for weeks prior to my pvp at NY on August 05.  My
urine flow was weak during the daytime and weaker in the night.  That's BHP.
I am doing very well now and couldn't ask more after my pvp.
As  Spread_deMocracy posted above that " You may just want to opt for
the operation--*****a piece of cake!*****-- and save your body the stress of
dealing with the meds and the side effects..."  Please visit an uro who is
able to do PVP.  To learn more form those PVP pioneers you can do some home
works by searching this site with "pvp Patrick", "pvp Mr. B", "pvp Dave C"....
It will help you to know more about pvp.  Wish you well.
