Hello Group,
I am new to this group and I am baffled by various abbreviations which I
have seen in letters.
I would like to know what is meant by TURP,UTI,DRE and PVP.
Bill.

Bill,

PVP = Photo-Selective Vaporization of the Prostate.  TURP = Trans
Uretheral Resection of the Prostate.  DRE = Digital Rectal Exam.  UTI =
Urinary Tract Infection.

Bill, may I recommend that you go to the local book store and get at
least one book on prostate health.  It should cover all these terms and
more in great detail.  Remember, information is now available to us
through many sources and it is this access to information that allows
us to be good medical consumers in making choices regarding our health
care.

Regards,

You will learn tons by typing the various acronymns into GOOGLE or YAHOO.
In a nutshell, TURP is "ROTO-ROOTER" of the prostate and purposefully cuts
away at the prostate, TUMT uses microwaves to do that, and PVP uses laser to
burn a tunnel through the prostate.   If you can, and if it makes sense for
your prostate, opt for a PVP.   Recovery is very quick.   More and more
surgeons are jumping aboard PVP.   Still some prostates need to be seriously
reduced and that may requie a TURP.
