I asked this in 2000 and got brushed off, sort of.

I take a small aspirin daily because statistical data on heart
attacks indicates this is wise.   I have no heart symptoms.
Similarly, I take some vitamins but have no vitamin deficiency.

At 84 I have no BPH symptoms but I take one capsule
of saw palmetto a day as a precaution.  (Two is the
standard "treatment".)

Is it reasonable to take saw palmetto as a prophylactic
to ward off BPH?

My Dr. gave me some saw palmetto and told me to keep taking it...as a
preventive measure..I take 3 every nite..saw palmetto extract 189 mg at
walmart..
This Dr  told me to get a urologist to inspect my prostate yearly-he was an
internal medicine DR.

At 84 with no BPH symptoms, I'd be spending that money on a good single malt
Scotch!  Seriously, saw palmetto doesn't work for everyone so if you have no
symptoms, there's no way to know if it's working as a prophylactic or not.

Mason...I never thought about "medicinal rebound" until my doctor severally
criticized my taking Saw Palmetto and hinted that I may be exacerbating my
BPH at the time.   Until that conversation, I had never thought of how the
body may react to various meds it may not need. A medicine is a medicine,
and an herbal is still a medicine.     Best wishes for best of health to
you.
