I have read all the newsgroup posts for the past 4 months, very, very
enlightening, thank you to all the contributors.

I am going in on 8-23-05 at Boca Raton Community Hospital, Florida USA.

I shall report to the Group how things are working out.

I have, however, a couple questions:

1. I live on the ocean. How soon after surgery can I go back to swim in the
pool or the ocean, sit around in a wet swimsuit or go to the steam room?

2. I love the Canadian Airforce Exercises (remember from the 1970's? I have
the fitness level of a 7 year old) When can I go back to do them again?

3. Any practical advice for me before I go in?

4. Anybody have experience with Boca Raton Community Hospital?

Thanks a lot,
Lothar

"3. Any practical advice for me before I go in?"

Can't comment on what to do before you go in, but I have some definite
advice for after the procedure: DRINK LOTS AND LOTS OF WATER.  I mean LOTS.
I did this, drinking as much as I could - and then drinking even more!!  The
result was that I had NO pain on urination following the surgery because, I
believe, the water made my urine considerably less acid.  I continued this
for a good week and a half, and was shocked at how painless my recovery was.

Best of luck.

Lothar,

Not knowing what your Uro told you I would suggest that you stop
taking any prostate related drugs ASAP. Why do I say this...think
of it this way, the laser will generate a passage of a given size. If you
have used drugs to make the passage larger, they will be removing
less material. If you wait to stop the drugs until afterwards, any drug
related passage enlargement will stop its effect and end up narrowing
the channel by that amount, somewhat negating the whole purpose
of doing it in the first place.

I would hold off on the exercises for awhile but swimming in the ocean
or going to the steam room shouldn't cause any problem. I used a hot
tub after mine and it actually helped me. I did drink lots and lots of
water for about a week. I also took ibuprofen for a few days as an
anti-inflammatory. Drove home 100 miles the next morning after a
3:00 p.m. procedure. Even went out to dinner with friends that evening.

Hope you have a successful procedure and thanks for keeping us
informed of your progress.

Lewis.

Quite a few urologists put patients on prostate shrinking drugs for a few
weeks before the procedure.

Lewis, thank you, and the others, for the advice.

I am on Uroxatrol and without it life is too miserable. The Uro said
nothing, but I will stop taking it two nights before and just suffer a
little for a day and a half.

You symptoms sound extreme. How big is your prostate?

Not too big, from what I remember the Doctor saying, about 45ml.

I had my pvp on June 2nd. Took off a week from work just because I didn't
know what to expect. Went back to work and had little to no blood which has
now completely gone away about 3 weeks ago.

I started walking first after about 2 months and am now jogging for 20
minutes at 5.1 on the treadmill.  Pre pvp I was running 40 minutes at 7.2.
Never needed any pain pills, not even aspirin and my doc told me to stop the
uroxatrol prior to the surgery. I'll have my 3+ month checkup on Sept 2. All
things considered this was the right decision for me.

Hope you have an easy recovery..

Thank you all for the advice. I had my pre-op examination last week. It
consisted of three blood samples, urin, EKG and chest x-ray.
The doctor's nurse called and said I should take the uroxatrol tonight - how
did she know to call me? Does the doctor follow this news group?
I'll go in at 10:30 in the morning, the operation is at 12 and I should be
out by 3, they say.
I let you know how it's going tomorrow night.

Best of luck.  Soon now you'll have the urinary stream of a 7yr old to match
your fitness level ;-)  Jim W.
