I had the Holium laser surgery on My Prostrate last Thursday at the St
Joseph Hospital in Nashua , New Hampshire. Had a lot of bleeding so
had to spend the night. I had to keep a catheter in all week in and I
hated that but I have been on aspirin for 15 yrs so I am not to
surprised. My urologist was Dr Gary Dunetz in Nashua  I recommend him
both as a person and as a surgeon. as of now I am into the 5 day and
the bleeding has stopped but I must have a small clot because I am
having a  hard time peeing.  I am a little sore but nothing  that even
requires a aspirin. I believe He will also be doing the laser scope
very shortly. Will let you Know but right now I am very happy with the
results. I was very unhappy I had to Keep The catheter in
I waited for years to have it fixed so I could avoid that with the
turp. But I know he did what needed to be done.

Glad you're feeling better.

Regarding your catheter 'experience', I note that I am now 1 month post PVP
and doing well.  What I do not understand, and what was never answered on
this forum, is why I NEVER had a catheter.  I woke up from the procedure
without one.  I thought that a catheter was part of the post surgery regimen
of any of the various prostate procedures. Did any of the other PVP veterans
here avoid the catheter as well?

I am 61 yr old who had PVP Feb 23 (10 weeks ago today) in Portland, OR.
I did not have a catheter after the procedure, but they had to
catheterize me at the hospital before releasing me (procedure at 2pm and
catheterization about 5 pm) and had to self catherize x2 (8pm and 2:30
am) during the first 12 hours after the procedure.  No problem urinating
after the first 12 hours except for the burning discomfort. Very little
blood after 12 hours.  Have no explanation why some PVP patients come
out of surgery with a cath and others do not.  Same URO did not put in
catheter after TUMT July 2, 04, and had to self catherize daily at
bedtime for the first week.

the second world warMy Father worked for the Ship yard. I Think
That is the Prettiest part of the Conutry. we were out there 5 years
ago a just loved it. Of course VP was was away buy the columbia river
just after the war was over and janzen beach had a walmart on it.

Chockman, wasn't it painful self cathing so soon after pvp? did you
have any problems with it?
Chockman - 06 May 2005 16:47 GMT
Hi Magna...

I had to self catherize both post TUMT (several times a day for the
first day or so and at bedtime during the first week to deal with the
urgency feeling at bedtime) and x2 during the 12 hr period after the
PVP.  I have no memory that self catheterization was any more
uncomfortable after either of the two procedures.  Of course there was
some burning and feeling of discomfort while self catheterizing after
both procedures, but I was on Pyridium after the PVP but not after the
TUMT.  Don't remember it as being a big deal.  There was blood in the
urine for the first couple of days after both procedures, but none after
the first couple of days.

Hi Tom...

Thanks for the information about Vanport.  There have been occasional
news reports on tv about Vanport, but not very much information.  It is
amazing how Vanport has nearly vanished off the map.  Thanks.
