PVPers...........a couple of questions.......asking for advice

Am scheduled for a PVP on April 18th. It will be done at 4 in the
afternoon and they will keep me in the hospital overnight. Don't know
if that is standard practice with them or they are doing it because of
my diabetes and asthma.

Question 1.......will the trip home ( 3 hours ) be do-able that day
following or should we get a motel and not even try it? We have the
whole day so we could drive 45 and stop etc.

Question 2.......Should I buy some Depends ahead of time so not to soil
my underwear or is that not a problem?

Thanks ahead of time for your advice.

My experience would be the reverse - drive home will probably be OK but you
might need to urinate without much warning or control so go with the depends
or a portable urinal.  Jim W.

Maybe, I should have clarified my very brief response to Don.  I would opt
for the motel BECAUSE I needed to pee about every hour during the first
night [a few hours after the procedure].  By the following day, all the pent
up fluid had been peed out.  Then I drove home with no problem.  Had I
elected to have been on the road instead of holed up in a motel - I would
have needed a pit stop every few miles.

My experience did not include an overnight stay in the hospital.  I had
the PVP at 2pm 2/23/05 and was discharged to go home (1 hour away) at
7pm without a cath, but was given the cath and instructions to use if
necessary.  Had to self-cath x2  at home at 8pm and 3am.  After that
could urinate without cath, although there was burning. Most likely you
will have frequency and urgency once urination is started post PVP. Did
not need any Depends at any time during the recovery (its now 6 weeks
post PVP).  Had a little drip of the Pyridium stain after urinating
which went into a little tissue.  All of us are different, but I would
guess that had I needed to drive (my wife drive) 3 hours, I would have
gone straight home since I sleep better at home than in a motel. There
certainly was no problem driving 1 hour and driving another 2 hours
likely would not have been a problem. The major problem in driving 3 hrs
would be to have some arrangement to relieve the bladder when the
frequent urge hits.  I would make sure that I started on the Pyridium
and the Bactrim DS (or whatever meds your URO puts you on) before
hitting the road.  My 2 cents worth....

Thank you all of you........being a male I probably would not have
heeded my wife's advice and tried to make it back home. The 3 hours is
not in a heavily populated area either.......probably 40-60 miles
between rest areas let alone towns.......... Northern Michigan.

What is Pyridium??
Chockman - 07 Apr 2005 04:54 GMT
According to my Physician's Desk Reference, Pyridium is phenozopyridine
hydrochloride, a urogesic, and it is a topical agent for relief of pain,
burning  and discomfort in the urinary tract.  It is helpful in reducing
discomfort after urinary tract procedures or in case of urinary tract
infections.  It causes the urine to turn orange-red in color but the
urine returns to normal color after discontinuing the medication.  My
uro had me take 200 mg 3 times a day by mouth for 6 days.  Hope that helps.
