Have read here and there that cranberry juice/supplement is good
for prostate/bladder health.
Has anyone heard or had any real life experiences with this ?
Is this just another 'old wives tale' type of thing ?
The rage forever has been saw palmetto, but I don't know anyone
that has ever had any long range continued benefit.
Cranberry the same ? ?
TIA

I can tell you this:  AFTER a PVP procedure, DO NOT take cranberry
juice/supplements.  It's akin to pouring gasoline on a fire.  The cranberry
juice/supplement renders your urine highly acidic and burns the already
inflamed urethra.

I can understand that, but for how long after the PVP ?
It's been 4 months for me now and everything is working
great (or as well can be expected at 65yrs).But I still
do have some bladder retention and probably will forever.
Have read/heard that the cranberry helps to keep the bladder
flushed and lessens the change of future infections.
Just curious if anyone has had positive results.
Thx

> but for how long after the PVP ?

I began taking cranberry capsules on day 17 after PVP.  By day 19, I
experienced the worst pain ever.

I nearly took Prosed/DS.  Before actually taking the Prosed, I figured out
the purpose of Prosed - to de-acidify the urine.

I immediately stopped the cranberry capsules - and within 24-hours, the
burning was gone.

By day 60, I observed any tenderness at the end of voiding was about gone -
so, in answer to you question [how long after the PVP], I'd say 'at least
2-months - preferably 3-months.  By 3-months, I'd be inclined to think one's
urethra had completely healed - and taking on a cranberry regimen shouldn't
pose any problems.

But, I cannot speak to any of the so-called 'benefits' attributed to
cranberry juice/supplements.

Cranberry juice is good for treating urinary tract infections.    I have
never heard of any other reason that it was good for prostate health.

I totally agree.  Since, anti-biotics are prescribed for all post-PVP
patients as an infection preventative, I see no benefit in taking cranberry
juice/supplements after PVP.

I asked my URO today about that and it does nothing for the bladder, it does
help kidneys.
Only good for woman on bladder.
Just what my uro said. But he also don't do PVP.

Zork:  it is believed that cranberry juice helps to control very minor
infections of the bladder and that the phytoestrogens contribute to overall
sustaining of one's already good health.  The phyto may also help BPH since
plant sterols are believed to be helpful...Saw Palmetto, etc.  However, if
you have relatively high blood sugar levels, then ANY straight fruit juice
is like adding gasoline to the fire since fruit juice drives up insulin.
Spikes in insulin aggravate BPH conditions.

Also, Saw Palmetto may not be useful for the long term in men who have DHT
levels too high for the dosage they are taking of Saw Palmetto.  OR, those
men are taking Saw Palmetto when their BPH is triggered by hypertension and
not by DHT levels.  OR, they are taking Saw Palmetto when their BPH comes
from Diabetes, Estradiols or other hormonal imbalances, and not DHT .   So,
even if those guys did take Saw Palmetto or even the FDA-approved DHT
inhibitors Finasteride or Dutasteride, they likely would not see any
improvement.  Without the proper blood testing for DHT, Estradiols, etc.,
one is shooting in the dark and might even cause a "rebound" effect that
might worsen things.   Hope this helps.   All the best to you.

Cranberry is effective against E. Coli, which is the most often cause of
UTI.  However if you have another strain of UTI - i.e. staphylococcus
aureus, etc. Cranberry is useless.

I am not a doc, but if your BPH is not caused by E.Coli...run away from
Cranberry

I don't see what you have against using cranberry extract supplements as a
preventative measure against prostatitis. For as long as I've used it, I
haven't had an infection in the prostate. Other people have stated that it
is beneficial, including a uro who was quoted on this newsgroup.
Why do you say "run away from cranberry"?

Develop a tender or inflamed urethra and you'll quickly understand.

James,
Was this caused by cranberry juice or extract supplement, or was a
pre-existing condition irritated by one or the other. Please describe what
happened.
