I would attempt to find a University which is not .. driven .. BY .. commercial
.. interests ..

Alternative / natural  / orthomolecular medicine may allow one to keep ones' ..
integrity ...

IE: Linus Pauling , Lendon Smith , Dr. Evan Shute

Who loves ya.

An oxymoron?

However the OP is looking for a PhD in presumably synthetic organic
chemistry.  These schools of medicine are just that.

The lab in which I work is funded in part by the government and
industry (first shot at inhibitors, they provide expression systems,
some bugs).  The boss also works grants to cater to the 'challenge'
aspect of organic chemistry as well...no integrity issues--simply the
cost of doing business.

Pauling's as close to organic as you're gonna get with these three.
