Hi all.
I've been taking assorted medications for ADD off and on for the past ten
years with mixed results. The problem is that in addition to ADD I have
anxiety problems and any dose of a CNS stimulant large enough to be
effective vs. the ADD makes the anxiety problems left. Anyway. I've
tried damn near ever non-stimulant treatment available, and none cut the
mustard. Reading anecdotal reports on the net leads me to believe that
I might find success with methamphetimine.
Now we get to the problem. Despite the fact that I've been seeing the
same MD, an ADD specialist, for over three years, he won't prescribe the
stuff. He says he'd like to but can't as the drug is "just too
controversial." Is he exaggerating and just trying to get out of some
extra paperwork, or could he get in trouble for prescribing this for an
adult with ADD? I figure trying to find someone else to prescribe it is
out of the question. What am I supposed to do, call up all the
psychiatrists listed in the yellow pages and ask "hi, do you prescribe
methamphetimine?" Yeah Right.
Anyway, I'm hoping that some of the practicing pharmacists out there who
read this could tell me how often they see Desoxyn prescriptions and just
what kind of trouble with law enforcement comes with prescribing and
filling prescriptions for this product. Is this something that would
vary from state to state perhaps? I'm in Nashville. I've read reports of
people taking it with good results online, so they must be getting it
somewhere.
I have had problems with addiction in the past (which I now realize
resulted from the self-medication of undiagnosed ADD), but have been clean
for going on ten years now and have stated that I would be more than
willing to take regular urine screens as a condition of getting a
prescription. If this stuff is such a problem that MD's can't prescribe
it, why is it legal?
thanks in advance,
Joe/Elvis

King,
You'll have some real trouble getting an RX for straight up methamphetamine
in the US. Its just too un-PC right now with all the meth problems in rural
areas.
What about Methylphenidate (ritalin)? It's essentially a refined
methamphetamine and is used everywhere. To be honest I have never seen
methamphetamine prescribed or worked anywhere that carried it. I would bet
that the advent of the newer, more complex amphetamines has all but retired
plain methamphetamine in the clinical setting.

I've tried multiple combinations of multiple formulations of
Methylphenidate, dexidrine, and adderall as well as many off label
medications. I've read reports of people responding well to
methamphetimine who had not previously responded to CNS stimulants. I
guess the war on drugs in more important than my ability to get anything
requiring sustained attention done in a timely manner.

If a patient with a legitimate medical need for a legal drug cannot be
prescribed it because of "political correctness" or because others
misuse it then maybe we simply ought to face the fact that we live
in a country ruled by the insane for the benefit of the insane. Time for
a regime change.
