A few issues came up recently:
1. Can a patient send a prescription through the mail?
2. Can a patient send a controlled substance through the mail (e.g. to
a family member whose prescription it is)?
3. Can a pharmacy fill a rx for a controlled substance if the
physician who wrote the prescription is only licensed in another
state?
4. Can a prescription be post-dated?
Thanks.

1.Written prescriptions can be mailed to and by a patient (hence mail order)
2 A patient can mail filled prescriptions to someone else. The law used to
state that you could not mail schedule IIs... not sure about that now. UPS
can be used ... that's how I get the majority of my C-IIs from our warehouse
3. It depends on the state and the drug. I believe Michigan can only fill
C-IIs from doctors in adjoining states.
4. No a prescription cannot be post dated. If a doctor wants to write
several rxs for the same drug (i.e. ritalin) they all must be dated for the
date actually written. However the doctor can write on each rx "Do not fill
until" and put on the date he/she would permit the patient to get the
medication.
Example Jimmy sees doctor on June 1 and will not have another appointment
until Sept 1. Dr wants to write a 30 day supply of ritalin (maximum amount
allowed by insurance company) and wants Jimmy to have enough for 3
months.( I'm not going to worry about # of days in month)
RX 1 today's date
RX 2 today's date and "do not fill until July 1"
Rx 3 today's date and "do not fill until August 1"
Hope this helps
