I have several phobias, one of which is flying. I thought of taking Xanax,
but I don't think that's gonna do it. Seven beers might, but that'll make me
too dizzy. Do you have any suggestions for a drug that removes fear, or
makes you not care?

I think it was Fulton Sheen who said:

Why are you afraid of flying? Do you think if God wants to call you
home, he has to crash an airplane to do it?

Trust me.  You don't want to get drunk before going on a plane.  I'm not
sure how it works, but there is something about the artificial atmosphere
that will react with it and screw you up.

Xanax will work if the dose is large enough.  Any benzo will work if the
dose is large enough.

There might also minor problems with trying to board an airplane while
inebriated ...

Triazolam in particular is noted for its ability to induce retrograde
amnesia so you don't even remember the experience. Or I've even heard some
people even just taken enough Benedryl or Gravol to basicaly knock
themselves out during the flight.

How far are you flying? From where to where?

Basically the fear is not being in control, and the fear of the aircraft
falling out of the sky.
Firstly, there is a backup system in all aircraft called the pilots.
Most LNAV/VNAV/AT glass cockpit flight systems nowadays have 3 other
backup systems, before all fail, which has never happened. Even if it
did, that is what the pilots are there for, who can fully control a
plane without the passengers even knowing.

WHat you should do is go to a phobia class at your airport before you
fly. These classes are usually free, and are lectured by pilots. Most
people that go to these classes come out feeling relieved, and have no
problem flying afterwards.
