I have seen this drug described as an antianxiolytic and, alternatively, as
an hypnotic.

What is the proper classification?

That depends. It's an anxiolytic if you're using it to treat anxiety (not
an antianxiolytic). It's a sedative/hypnotic if you are using it to get to
sleep.

Or a muscle relaxant.  Or an anticonvulsant.  Benzodiazepines are certainly
very versatile.

Heck, I've even seen it used for intractable hiccups.

PDR states it is an anxiolytic, but heck I use it
weekly as an anticonvulsant on patients!

How it is classified may not really make a huge
difference in its approved usage.
