Vitamins: a metaphor for human nature?

I've got a bottle of MULTI-vitamins sitting on the shelf. That bottle
just sitting there makes me feel better. Two or three times a week one
even ends up in my mouth. Makes me feel righteous, that I'm doing
something to help myself, like 20 minutes on the stationary bike. Really
though, for the average American, a multivitamin does very very little.
No harm done, but not much help.

I remember my days in retail, and I quickly learned the PC answer (i.e.,
Pharmaceutically Correct answer) to the oft-heard request for a good
vitamin. I always rather liked the P. Incorrect observation that
Americans have the most expensive urine in the world.

As I took my vitamin this morning, I got a little lift. I'm helping
myself, I'm doing good, fighting the good fight, and sooo easy too. A
win-win situation. Of course, it's mostly for naught, and the things I
really need to do (lose 15#, exercise, do taxes, get off the internet)
those are HARD, go away! I want the easy way out. I guess it's human
nature.

When the bottle is empty, I suppose I'll buy another.

Trip to the pharmacy: $2 (bus ticket).
Bottle of multi-vitamin: $10.
Feeling like a self-help genius: priceless.

You may also want to check that ingredient list ... are you SURE it's just
vitamins and minerals?  ;-)
