What is the safe amount of mcg. of Biotin for a woman? I went to a
health food store today, and was told to buy the pill with 2500 mcg.
That seems high. I am buying this because my hair is getting thinner,
and I am losing more. A doctor suggested I try Biotin...but I neglected
to ask, what amount of mcg. Anyone know?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
The daily recommended intake of biotin for females 19 and up is 30 mcg/day.
There have been no reports of any toxicity in individuals taking mega doses
of biotin. Actually, megadoses of biotin is used therapeutically in some
pathological cases:
-For people with diabetes, the usual recommended dosage of biotin is 7,000
to 15,000 mcg daily to lower blood sugar levels.
-For treating "cradle cap" (a scaly head rash often found in infants), the
usual dosage of biotin is 6,000 mcg daily, given to the nursing mother (not
the child). A lower dosage of 3,000 mcg daily is used to treat brittle
fingernails and toenails.
But I'm just a pharmacy student, so I think its best that you talk to your
doctor or pharmacist before doing anything.

Thanks, Sam , for your reply. One more question. If Biotin is good for
growth of hair on a women's hair...could it also cause facial hair...in
unwanted places?
I don't want a mustache and beard!
Thanks for any more info.

It wouldn't cause the growth of facial hair or the growth of hair in
unwanted places. Biotin is necessary for PRODUCING healthy hair. It doesn't
affect the distribution of hair.
Personally, I don't think biotin will do you any good unless you are not
getting enough in your diet. If you are eating a normal diet, you shouldn't
have to supplement with biotin. But on the other hand, biotin may help
improve the health of your hair through its action on the metabolism of
scalp oils, so you might wanna try it out.
If you're going to go ahead with taking biotin supplements, don't drink any
alcohol, ingest uncooked eggs or take any anticonvulsant drugs within a
couple of hours of taking your biotin tablet because these greatly decrease
the absorption of biotin in your gut.
Hope this helps,
Sam
