The vet has occasionally put my dog on Prednisone 20 mg. one twice daily for
a short duration for a stiff neck/disc over the years. This last time it
was Prednisolone 20 mg. but giving one and a half twice daily. What's the
difference between the two and don't say the spelling.
Thanks,
Susan

Prednisone is converted to prednisolone, the active form, in the human
liver (apparently in dogs too, but I'm no veterinarian).
Mg per mg, unless there are liver problems, they are essentially
considered equivalent.

Both Prednisone and Prednisolone are synthetic glucocorticoids that have
short to medium acting anti-inflammatory properties. They differ in :
1. Chemical structure and molecular weight.
2. Prednisone is only administered orally. Prednisolone can be given orally,
topically, or injected.
3. Prednisolone SLIGHTLY has a greater anti-inflammatory effect (not
significant).

Thank you both for the information. The vet rattles things off so fast that
sometimes it's hard to digest.

> 16 mg of prednisolone is equivalent in antiinflammatory activity to 20 mg
of prednisone. 4 mg of prednisolone equiv to 5 mg of prednisone.

Their chemical structures differ slightly, but each forms the other, and
this reaction goes "back and forth." Scientifically, we would say they are
"reversible metabolized to each other" As for dose, they are essentially
equivalent.
