questions from a layman about antibiotics

Hello all,

I have to take antibiotics (amoxil) three times a day during ten days to
treat a very painful tooth-gum infection.

Now, I remember having read many years ago that a certain substance (or
food or supplement or whatsoever) inhibits the action of antibiotics.
Was it milk? Vitamin C? Calcium? Or something else?

What is good to take along with antibiotics? What is not advisable?
Hopefully not milk.

I would appreciate any piece of advice that would help me speed up and
enhance this treatment.

Iron .. do not take iron ..

'They' cannot give you an answer if .. meat .. with its' highly absorbable form
of iron makes any difference ..

Too chickenshit to test it ..

Do you have some glyoxide to put on the infected area?  Seems to me that
would be a big help.  It should help with the pain, and aid the swelling and
infection to go down.

what antibiotic are you taking?  BTW I would call your pharmacist and have
her explain it to you.... someone didn't do their job correctly if you left
with such an important question.

A good salt mouth wash always helps.

Sorry I reread your post.  Amoxicillin does not interact with any foods or
vitamins or IRON.  Please do not get medical advice from unqualified people
on the internet.  I also repeat my statement that your pharmacist should
have given you this advice when you picked up your drug,  I know that this
time of year is hell for pharmacists (cough and cold and flu season) but it
takes about a minute to counsel a patient on amoxicillin.  If you ever have
a question about any medications you receive then call the pharmacy where
you got the medicine and get the answers (the phone number is on the
bottle).

Amoxicillin
Iron supplements may make amoxicillin less effective. Take iron supplements at
least 2 hours before or after this oral antibiotic.

There are no studies that have confirmed this. Don't be so hasty and believe
everything you read off the net.

At the time of my posting here there hasn't been any mention to your ? about
what is good to take with antibiotics.   Well I believe live culture yogurt
is good take with antibiotics because it helps to maintain the good bacteria
in your GI tract that is killed off by the antibiotics.

Actually, it is not a good idea to take live active culters with your
antibiotic as the antibiotic may go towards killing off the live cultres
rather than your infection.  It is better to take the cultres about 2
hours apart from the antibiotic.  That way you still replace the lost
bacteria in your GI tract and the antiobiotic can kill off the infection
 it was meant to treat.
