Does anyone know if this is going to be available eventually, or should we just
encourage physicians to switch to one of the zillion other guaifenesins out
there?

Don't know if it is true, but have heard that one pharmaceutical
company in the US has purchased all the rights to marketing RX
strengths of guaifenisin.  Seems to be true, because all brands
I've been ordering are no longer available, save one...
Liquibid.

we can't even get Liquibid. we got a letter in the mail saying that the
HUmibid line will be available in Jan 2004 from a new manufacturer. I don't
know if generics will then follow.

Mucinex is the only Extended Release Guaifenisin because the submitted a NDA
to the FDA and the others did not.  This is because Guaifenesin was
grandfathered in because it was such an old drug and therefore never had all
the paperwork completed.  Mucinex submitted the paperwork with OTC labeling
and it was approved.  Since no one else did.. they will no longer be legal.

Of course no one has told the doctors about this... so expect to be making
even more phone calls this cough and cold season.  Baah... humbug.  Maybe we
can import them from Canada.

It is available without a prescription.  Why would you need to get a
prescription?

The OTC Guaifenesin is very expensive compared to generics. OTC also isn't
covered by any insurances.
We can dispense single entity Guaifenesin until the end of November and so
far
all insurance companies still pay for it. I probably have more than I will
dispense
before the end of November (600 and 1000mg) but even if I can't get credit
on
extra product will have made enough on them. I'm the only one in town with
any
single entity Guaifenesin left in stock. (Makes the other guys look bad to
docs and
the public).

I buy mine at:

http://www.uspharmacyproducts.com/cgi-bin/mivavm?Merchant2/merchant.mvc+Screen=C
TGY&Store_Code=HPE&Category_Code=GUAITAB

$12.95 for 100 tablets of 400 mg. strength.  That doesn't seem too expensive to
me.  It is a lot better than hassling with trying to find it in the drugstore.

I used to think so myself, until I took 1200 mg and boy did it break up the
congestion in my lungs.  You need the large dose to work.  the small amount in
1 or 2 tsp doesn't cut it.
