I notice that I can get Prilosec OTC (20mg) for a lot less than I am
now paying for prescription generic omeprazole (20mg) even with a 50%
reimbursement from my insurance on the generic.
Projecting up from my 50% copay, the generic appears to be priced at
$3/pill, whereas the Prilosec OTC is just a bit over $1/pill. Am I
being ripped off by my insurance (BCBS of Oregon) or my pharmacy
(Safeway) or is this just a temporary situation until enough people
are hooked on the OTC drug?

I saw it in Costco for 60 to 70 cents for a 20 mg tablet.

I miscalculated - Prilosec OTC at Safeway is 60 cents per 20mg tablet
in the 42 count package.

the rip off is from Merck Astra Zeneca
not your pharmacy
I am still paying 83.50/30 and that is just the cost of the drug, not
overhead costs
and professional fees

Not that it matters much, but the OTC is a different form of omeprazole
so it is not exactly like the rx formulation

"Not that it matters much" ?? (I am not a pharmacist.) What does this
mean? Is it still a delayed release form? Will it still have the same
therapeutic effect? Is the side effect profile identical? IOW, will I,
as a patient, ever know the difference?

Only your pocketbook will notice the difference. My wife purchased Canadian
Prilosec (Called Losec up there) and it was a tablet, not a purple
capsule. It worked just as well as Prilosec or maybe even better.
Probably a Coca-Cola tastes the same in Japan or China as the United States?
The bottle is somewhat different.

It is not a canadian vs american formulation
It is a different form of the drug... not a different brand so there could
be potential problems as
noted in my other email
>Only your pocketbook will notice the difference.
My body notices the difference and I'm not the only one. I
suspect that the time release mechanism doesn't work as well.

I hate to say this- I'm a retail pharmacist and a confirmed generic user and
recommender-I always scoff at those who say generics don't work for them, but I
have noticed that the Prilosec brand (prescription and OTC) worked fine, but
whenever I use the generic ($10.00 on my insurance card as opposed to $25.00
over the counter)-I wake up at night with reflux at least 4-5 times a week-as
opposed to none with the brand. I am not sure what causes this problem-every
other generic works. It can't be the release, because Prilosec works over 24
hours because the medication completely shuts down the acid producers in the
stomach and it takes 24 hrs for your body to make new ones-not because of any
release system.
Once again-I'm confused!

When will generic OTC omeprazole become available? I went into Walmart
looking for the generic Walmart version and there was none there. So I
just assume it hasn't come out yet, I wish it would though.

My wife and son have taken with great success, the Canadian brand Losec.
Losec works for them as well as the brand name Prilosec. It would be
interesting for you to order some Losec and compare it verses Prilosec brand
and the American generic. Maybe there is some problem with the way GE
Prilosec is tested and the FDA should do the actual test themselves to make
sure the drugs are indeed the same therapeutically..

This was my comment. No, I don;t think there is any significant difference.
It is always possible
that someone could have an allergic reaction to one salt over anther but I
have not heard of this
happening.
