Taking probiotics and antibiotics concurrently

Is it a bad idea to take both pills at the same time (ie is it more likely
that the antibiotic will start attacking the good bacteria in the probiotic
right away and be wasted somehow - thus negating the purpose of both pills).

It is advisable to take probiotics when taking antibiotics (especially if
taking antibiotics long term)because antibiotics kill both good and bad
bacteria, and probiotics put back some of the good bacteria killed by the
antibiotic.  If taking both, what is the recommended separation time between
the two, or is it okay to take them at the same time.

Thanks...Pete

Nobody answered this, so I'll just tell you what I do.  I don't
know if it makes a difference to separate taking probiotics and
antibiotics, but that's what I have done when taking antibiotics,
because it seems to make sense.  If I take antibiotics with
meals, 3x/day, I eat yogurt with live cultures and/or take
probiotic pills about 2 hours after the meal.  I have usually
managed to avoid diarrhea with this routine.  YMMV.

Thanks FurPaw...I guess there aren't a lot of pharmacists left in this group
anymore, or they have lost interest (no one answered my taking pills with
prune juice or prunes either).  You can see some comments I received (and
countered to) in the sci.med newsgroup (on both subjects) if you care to
take the time.

And no comments on my sucralfate contraindication with PPI's either, which
was a very legitimate question, which I explained in detail.
