A dentist recently recommended a combination of 500 mg
acetominophen + 200 mg ibuprofen BID to QID for pain after a dental
procedure.  Worked remarkably well.

However, I have this vague memory of being told not to take the
two drugs together, other than perhaps for a very short duration.  I
haven't been able to find much on web searches -- I'm hoping one of
the pharmacists might comment.

Thanks!

Hi Kay;
I don't see a problem taking both acetaminophen & ibuprofen short term
because they both have different mechanisms of action.  The need to
take them long term should be re-evaluated with the possiblity of
increasing the dose of one to cover the pain vs. taking 2 drugs.  It
would depend on whether the pain is due primarily to inflammation or
not, in which case the ibuprofen would be the choice.
