Ok I retired as a Pharmacist in 1998 ,,

BUT honestly, over the years that I worked behind the counter I admit
That I became jaded somewhat in regard to how expensive some
medications are...

BUT .

I received an Rx for 60 Zyvox  600 mg Thursday,   and even this old
goat almost fell on the floor when I what the  regular Retail price
was.....  I mean over $4000.00 for 60 tablets, that's like having
someone slam a door (hard)  on all 4 of your fingers... HURTS !.

Yes I do have insurance...so my Co Pay was only 50 bucks...  and Yes I
would have paid retail if I did not BUT it seems to me that not a hell
of a lot of individuals could afford to do that....

Sorry for the semi rant... But I am still shaking my head ..  Major
mistake on my part was not checking to see if the Pharmacy actually
made 10 bucks or if they lost money on this Rx ..at least the
Pharmacist was smart enough to only order 20 tables from the wholsaler
to get me going..and order the other 40 direct ...  Smart Pharmacist
in my opinion..  Of course the Insurance company would not agree

Oh well its only money !!!

Bob,

We're an independent that buys in a co-op with several hundred other
pharmacies.  Our cost for 60 600mg Zyvox is $3600. There isn't much
break from awp either.

So $3750 would be about the best we could do for a loyal cash pt.
Considering our overhead per rx, and the cash outlay to stock the drug,
it would be a pretty sorry return. I wouldn't want to do it often.

Thanks Eli....

Oh I can relate to your comment on a "Sorry" Return....LOL

I'm from the old school in that yes I was proud to be a Pharmacist and
enjoyed my years behind the counter, especially enjoyed interacting
with my customers both Professionally and socially. BUT I was also in
business and always had to cover my expenses, which sometimes was not
exactly easy...

Looked up the cost in the McKesson catalog today.  20 tablets list for
$1136

Other than setting a ridiculously high price on a new antibiotic, is
there any other mechanism to prevent physicians from giving it out like
candy and thereby destroying the bactericidal efficacy of the  new drug?

In the hospital where I work, Zyvox needs Infectious Disease approval
before we can dispense it.

Which only strengthens my argument.  Only a high price discourages it's
overuse, and even that only works imperfectly.

To the original poster, did you really need Zyvox?  Was you death
imminent?  Did the physician culture a bacteria that was only
susceptible to Zyvox?  Would you have died if they had tried Augmentin
or Ceftin, or Suprax?

Well I am the original poster... And I am a retired Pharmacist.

In Dec of 2006 I had surgery to improve the blood flow to both of my
legs because  claudication  severely restricted my ability to walk
more then a few blocks yada yada... In March of 2007 I had my first
dental problem in over 25 years (abscess tooth) ..had to have the
tooth removed .. a week later my right groin became infected at the
site of the graft of the bypass ... The "Guess" was the infection from
my tooth caused the graft at site of the bypass to my right leg to
become infected ...  So I had to go back in the Hospital and they
"ripped" out the graft to that leg....

Was in the Hospital a little over a week..an was on IV  Vancomycin in
the hospital and once released I was maintained on  Vancomycin for a
total of 42 days ...twice a day IV drips...

Couple of weeks ago I noticed my left groin was tender.. called the
Doctor and was told to come right into the Hospital where they ran
a few tests, had a Cat scan done of the area on the left leg
..determined that the infection was superficial BUT close to the graft
to that leg... They then gave me the Rx for Zyvox...600 my BID for 30
days...

The removal of the original graft to my right leg WAS done because
that infection was a threat to my life....I presume they just wanted
to use a sledge hammer instead of a tack hammer to treat this
superficial infection in my left leg...hence the Vyvox.....
