What kind of laxative is safe to be used for constipation  long-term?
How does one avoid laxative abuse or is it really something to worry
about?

I take a heaping tablespoon of powdered psyllium husk on my
cereal every morning (and a big glass of OJ or water).  It keeps
the stool soft by absorbing a lot of water.  Takes a bit of
getting used to, but it's not all that bad.  Start with much
smaller amounts - it can cause gas.  Psyllium is the active
ingredient in Metamucil.

You could also try other fiber-based stool softeners, like
Citrucel.  These aren't laxatives; they just add a lot of fiber.
Or eat bran cereal - again, start with small amounts because it
can cause gas.

And eat lots of nonstarchy vegetables.
