I take 40mgs of simvastatin in the evening abt 6pm

I'm 48 yr old male...good health... non-smoker

Occasionally I go out with co-workers and have a few
alcoholic drinks for happy hour.... 4-6pm

I don't feel likes it a good idea to do that THEN take
the simvastatin pill when I get home.  Mixing alcohol
and throwing that drug right on top of it in my stomach
and system.

So.... I've been skipping taking the simvastatin on
evenings I've been to happy hr.

This does NOT happen often.

But...am I doing any harm skipping it in these
circumstances?

I most prob miss about 20% of my simvastatin, especially when I work eve
shift, and I usually drink several glasses of wine in the evening.

My levels have never been better.  In Jan my HDL was 60, LDL 50 and
Cholesterol wqas 150, far better than when I took Lipitor.   And my liver
function tests were normal.

And yes, I am a pharmacist.

Ok well it sound like no harm done skipping it then

I just am NOT comfortable taking the simvastatin right
AFTER or BEFORE having a few beers or drinks

I would assume (maybe incorrectly)..... that the combo
is VERY hard on liver and such

Looks like a beer or two is okay, but stay away from the grapefruit juice.

I'm curious

Why do you think you are doing better on simvastatin
than Lipitor?

I take 20 mg of Simvastatin vs 10 mg of Lipitor.  That may partly explain
the difference.  However, most experts agree that the 2 to 1 ratio is
bioequivelent.

Other than that, I'm not sure.

Same as what my doc told me

he said that 20 mgs of Lipitor was equivalent to 40 mgs
of simvastatin

But..... which one is lowest cost per DOSE?

That's an easy one.  Lipitor is not avaliable as a generic, Simvastatin is.
Under my insurance, Lipitor should have cost me $30/month and Simvastatin
is only $5.  What my MD was doing was writing an Rx for 20 mg, 1 tablet
daily even though he wanted me on 10 mg. This effectively reduced the cost
of the Lipitor to $15/mo. Since my wife is on the same dose, we are now
spending $10/month vs $30. That's about $240/year in savings.

sorry

I guess I should have mentioned that I paying full cost
of my statins out of my pocket

I don't have any prescription insurance

I'm full time college student (adult) and only have
high deductible major medical.... no medicines or
dental coverage....all that's out of pocket

I believe that simvastatin is on the WalMart $4 list and would only cost you
$4 per month.  Lipitor would be very expensive.  As to side effects, I took
Zocor(simvastatin) with no problems.  My insurance changed and would only
pay for Lipitor.  After 3 weeks of Lipitor I though I was going to die.  I
had a hard time moving without hurting and got to the point where I couldn't
even lift a small book because the joint and muscle pain was so bad - and
this was after they reduced the dose of Lipitor.  I don't think dose is as
important (side effect wise) as how you tolerate each individual drug.

WOW, if I could take it I would go with the lovastatin then.

Well I have been really bad then.

I am been taking simvastatin for about 10 months and have recently
been feeling increasing ill. Since I know that my cousin has had a bad
reaction to statins,  I decided, as a test not to take my statins for
a few weeks. I must say I am feeling a huge difference, I feel normal
again.

So its back to the Doc

In what ways have you been filling ill?

Symptoms?

Well it started off as a constant pain in the large muscles of my
upper back together with a feeling of general malaise, then joint and
other muscle pain. Finally I appeared to be getting the flu for about
2 or 3 days each week for 3 weeks. I then rationalised that I could'nt
be having flu every week, it was probably the statins, stopped taking
the statins and gradually began to feel better.

Good thing you stopped, it would only get worse.  Try another statin, they
seem to be very specific.  Lipitor almost killed me, but I can take Zocor
with little to no problems.
