I found some light brown powder material in my son's wastebasket and
also a pop can which he had obviously crushed in alittle bit and there
was a burned pile of black ashy substance on it. How do I find out
what this is before I confront my son?

SERIOUSLY DUDE, it sounds like HEROIN to me.
Particularly since he crushed it and smoke it and
it was BROWN in color.
Could be some impure meth however, cut from
nasty crap that is VERY UNHEALTHY.
I WOULDN'T TAKE IT TO THE COPS!
f.ck THE COPS... Take it to an INDEPENDENT LAB
that does drug analysis and explain the situation and
DEMAND under SIGNED CONTRACT confidentiality in
the matter. Even if it would technically be illegal for
YOU ENFORSE such a CONTRACT (if it is illegal for
the lab to NOT report DRUGS to the COPS) they might
just work with you under the circumstances.
Good Luck, and remember... a youthful indiscretion
need not ruin a person's whole f.cking life... particularly
if you can make sure it doesn't. But don't IGNORE the
situation or DENY it's importance. TAKE ACTION!
PS: I haven't used drugs or alcohol in almost 30 years
but my experience with in back in the day is what leads
me to the conclusions I made above. The rest is common
sense,... if you think about it! AND NO, I am not a Dr.
And Good Luck!
