I tend to drink quite a bit (vodka) on a daily basis. I recently
underwent a minor procedure and my Dr. gave me Vicodin for pain and
said to take 2 tabs every 4-6 hours as needed. I assumed that the
recommendation to avoid alcohol was due to the interactions with the
narcotic. I had NO IDEA THAT VICODIN HAD ACETAMINOPHEN IN IT!!!
I never take Tylenol because i know the combination of ACET and alcohol
is very bad for the liver....however, I DID take up to 2 tabs over the
course of 4-8 hours (usually half a tab every hour or so). During this
time I was drinking as i usually do, and that's several (as in, i can
put away a 1.75 in 3-4 days) vodka / diet soda drinks over the course
of the evening.
I only had enough Vicodin for about 7 days, and am really freaking out
thinking i seriously damaged my liver. I never vomitted or had any side
effects that would outright indicate liver damage, but I am very
nervous. I suppose at this point the damange is done, but I was hoping
that someone would tell me not to worry and that only long term use
would cause serious problems - or maybe something i can do to help my
poor liver!
TIA

Why don't you have liver function tests run by your doctor? The booze
probably did more damage than the acetaminophen Now you know that they put
acetaminophen in darn near everything. Probably every adult male who takes
over two shots a day should have lab work done to see if drinking is causing
damage.

I wouldn;t worry about a few doses of Acet. especially if you are not
worried about drinking that much alcohol..
you will be dead from the cirohsis but it won;t be caused by a few tylenol
