Hi,
I purchased some anti-inflamattory capsules for my mom who doesnt have
medical insurance from duane reade outlet in NYC midtown. I was charged
$150 for that. Later I checked that online prices for same is around
$40. I called up another local pharmacy in NJ and they said it would
cost around $40 (I live in NJ).  When I called duane reade back they
said, they wont reimburse or make any adjustments unless I prove to
them that a local pharmacy is willing to charge less (I need to show
them a print out). I cannot do that since I was told NJ state laws
prevent my local pharmacy from printing out their prices. I am out of
ideas of what to do. This is plain burglary and dishonesty and I am
appalled that a pharmacy chain like duane reade  which is so famous
could do this. Any one has suggestions on what I can do abt it?
Thanks.

Try another pharmacy in N.Y.  I thought N.J. pharmacies had to give the
prices of the top 100 drugs.

That is just pure capitalism at work. How can you call it "plain burglary
and dishonesty"?  Welcome to the world of expensive medications with no cost
control unless you happen to be the government or an insurance company.  God
didn't give you the right to expect a pharmacy not to make all the money it
could from you.  What about  gasoline prices going over three dollars per
gallon?   Even if you have health insurance, now the companies want you to
shop around to find the "best" price for doctors and pharmaceuticals. BTW,
isn't NYC the place for hamburgers that cost ten dollars and up anyway? I
thought everything from doctors to rent was very expensive in the city.

I doubt you can do much about it as you have already paid for the medication
and it is probably illegal for the pharmacist to take it back. Do you
consider a pharmacy in NJ to be local to midtown NYC?  I have a $150 bottle
of pills in my desk and my wife took about two of them and then quit. She
found out that she would have to take it for months to find out if it worked
and that it only worked for less than half of all patients who took it.

The mother of a fellow pharmacist friend of mine sold her NYC parking
space for over $1,000,000.00--and this was years ago! Kinda makes $150
for ANYTHING in NYC seem like a bargain!

Regarding the poster's claim of being overcharged, I'd need to see the
rx and whether the script was filled with brand or generic, just to
mention a couple of issues. Regardless, it does pay to shop around.
