Creatine

I'm using creatine as a supplement before my workout and I've had some good
results after one month's use. I took 20g/day for 5 days and now I'm
maintaining with 3g/day Do you pharmacists have any advice regarding
creatine use? I mean, do you usually advise AGAINST using creatine? Does it
have any long term side-effects or health problems? I haven't talked to a
physician or pharmacist before use, and I'm just following the dosage
instructions on the bottle.

(By the way, I'm a 2nd year pharmacy student and I can't wait to learn about
all these things =)

By second year of pharmacy school, shouldn't you be able to use the
resources any of us might use? (And if not, I'm sure you can find the
Pharmacy and/or Medicine library and talk to one of the friendly
librarians)

Your biochemistry text might be a good starting point.  As well, your
physiology text should cover muscle metabolism.

As well, I suggest going through a pubmed search on keyword creatine.  
From there, you should be able to find the exercise physiology research
on the dose response of creatine.  As well, you might be able to find out
what portion of your "results" are due to creatine and what portion is
due to hard work and commitment.

I think you guys understood me wrong...
I know ALL about the physiology and biochemistry of creatine. And yes I've
spent many hours looking into medical journals about its long term effects,
and all the journal articles I've read say that it has NO long term side
effects if used properly. Hell,  I wouldn't be taking creatine if it weren't
for all those journal articles I read first. I only wanted to confirm this
from practicing pharmacists who have experience in counselling patients
about creatine, thats all, because it seems too good to be true.

Hey, its not like im taking any anabolic steroids like Androstenedione. I'm
just using creatine as a supplement for my workout. Creatine help me workout
longer and stimulate more muscle synthesis. I put in LOTS of hard work when
I'm working out.

I don't think many practicing pharmacists are talking to people about
creatine.  The vast majority of it is bought through "health" stores such
as GNC or online, and the advice you get there is worth every penny you are
paying for it.

If you have read the journal articles, then you have seen the doses used
that show some effectiveness.  As well, you will see that the performance
difference that it makes is small enough that it will be noticable only to
trained athletes.

Creatine will not "let you work out longer".  A trained athlete using
creatine may notice that they are able to complete one or possibly two more
reps weight training.  That is because creatine is a source of ATP.

Creatine does nothing for increasing muscle hypertrophy.  The accumulation
of creatine in the muscle will exert a small osmotic pressure resulting in
a small amount of water retention in the muscle, however, this is modest
(on the order of a total change in body weight of 2 lbs).

To be absolutely blunt, unless you are a trained athlete, creatine is
likely doing very little for you.  Hard work and dedication will do far
more than any supplement.  For a trained athlete, the small increase in ATP
available may be useful in training and competition.  For the vast majority
of people supplements are a waste.

But sales of creatine, whey protein, glutamine and all the other horrible
tasting stuff in GNC does help stimulate the economy.  P.T. Barnum knew the
market...

Well, I've gained 15 lbs in 1 month and I am noticably bigger and more lean.
I've never grown this fast before. So I really think the creatine is doing
something for me.

To my knowledge, the research has yet to find long term problems caused by
creatine use. Got any references?

There have been cases reported of atheletes that use creatine having kidney
damage, however, this can't be attributed to the creatine use.  The kidney
damage seen in athletes is related to attempts to dehydrate in order to
make weight class.

Androstenedione is not an anabolic steroid.
Its a precurser - and a weak one at that.
