Hi,
I have a BS in Biology and minor in Chemistry ages ago (1994) :) I am
currently a stay at home mom raising two small children and want very
much to enter pharmacy school in the next two years. The school
closest to where I am living (Shanadoah University in Winchester
Virginia) has the requirement that science courses like chemistry,
biology, physics and Calculus be taken within the last ten years. In
my case, I would have to retake these courses in order to be considered
for admissions to their school. Needless to say, I am not very
encouraged to apply to this school. My question, do you folks know if
this TEN year requirement for basic science courses is a standard among
pharmacy schools? This is important to me because I want to have my
options open....I very much want to start studying for my PCAT and stop
worrying about retaking these courses --- very time consuming for me
now as my kids are only 1 and 3 years of age. I appreciate any
responses from you.
Thanks, Deb

I would call that School and make an appointment with an admissions
officer... Seems to me that you are already a proven student with a
degree granted not that long ago...
Schools around Winchester include Maryland at Baltimore and Howard in
DC .. call each of them... or any other school you may want to
attend... (of the three I will admit that I too would prefer
Shanadoah...and I am a Graduate of one of the other two...lol)
Go for it ... ! one on one with the admission officer...

It depends on the school. I went to the University of Iowa. They would
not accept my organic chem courses that were 5 years old. I was quite
unhappy. I took the courses again and was even more unhappy because the
equipment and techniques we used were ancient in comparison with my "too
old" organic chem courses (where we did everything with new equipment
microscale). Other departments were not as strict, in fact the school
accepted everything except the chem courses. You may be able to test
out of some of the basic courses, too. It is worth asking. Check with
all of the schools you are interested in, it will most likely vary
considerably.

Hi!
Unfortunately, I don't have access to the initial message. However,
you do need to check with each school because each one will have
different requirements. For example, some will require a Bachelor's
degree while others will consider an applicant as long as certain
pre-professional courses are completed.
To get the contact information for all of the schools of pharmacy in
the US, try this link:

I hope this helps.

Schools may make exceptions, but it may depend on the actual course and
university that you took your original courses at.
