When I saw my Elavil prescription was going run out in two weeks I began to
taper by taking one pill every three days for two weeks then one pill every
four days for three weeks (and still had some left over for "just in
case").. By the time I stretched them that far apart I was no longer worried
that I hadn't made an appt. to get a refill, I decided if they were only
going to give me two refills at a time between M.D. visits then it couldn't
have been as necessary as they led me to believe, so I tapered myself off
and didn't go back. My uneducated guess tells me you just need to stretch
out the taper for as long as possible to minimize the chance of seizures or
other possible withdrawal symptoms.
I think only you can determine if the need for continuing medication exists.
In my case, once I had my federal taxes paid up and the liens removed I no
longer had any need for medication because I resolved the cause of my panic
attacks (and knew it).
