What's the longest lead time for the development of any marketed drug,
including R&D and FDA approval? Does anyone know of a case of a young
pharmacologist coming up with a compound, putting it into development,
and seeing it hit the market only after his retirement!?

On average it takes 10 years and 2000 volumes  of data 4" thick to
bring a drug to market in the US. Since the average patent is from 17
to 19 years and 10 of it is already eaten up, we have the answer as to
why drugs are so expensive in the US.
