Horrible taste in mouth

For the past month or so I've had a terrible taste in my mouth.  I
thought I might have Thrush but my tongue looks fine.  Also some days
are worse than others.  Sometimes it's so bad it wakes me at night!

I am wondering if it could be any of the medications that I take daily.
I've been on all of them for a long time (most more than a year) which
would make me wonder why now, but I guess it's still possible.

I take Flexeril 5mg bid, Celebrex 200mg daily, Tramadol 50mg bid,
Klonopin 2.5 mg bid, calcium citrate 500mg bid, Prevacid 30mg daily.
I've been on the Celebrex for about five months (Vioxx before that).
All others I've been on for a year or more.

Would any of these be causing the problem?  Is there anything I can do
about it other than stop taking the offending med?  There really isn't
anything on the list that I could do without and still remain mobile.

Thanks

Jane,
If you did not have the problem until after you started taking a certain
medication--it's my guess that the the medication is causing the problem.
I advise you to discuss your problem with your doctor and ask him or her
if there are alternative medicines that might NOT have that side effect.
In the mean time, carry CERTS with you and use one when you notice the bad
taste.  I should note that your phar. should be able to provide print-outs
related to each of your medications. Perhaps the print-outs will provide
some clues as to which of the medications are the source of the
problem--look for words like "dry mouth".

Jason,

Thanks for the reply.  Actually there are a couple of things that I
take that mention dry mouth.  The thing is I've been on them for over a
year and never had this problem until recently.  That's why I'm
stumped.

Jane, please see an ENT man.  It might not be the medications.

Jane, on second thought I would start with a dentist.  They are trained now
to look for different problems in the mouth.

Jane,

I've read your case and if you have been taking the meds for a while
and only getting the bad taste now in your mouth, maybe you should see
a dentist, you could have gingivitis or some other dental problem,is
there any bleeding in the mouth? i.e. when you brush your teeth? This
could be a cause of the bad taste. Have you noticed any odour that
goes with the bad taste?
In the mean time, to relieve the bad taste, gargle with a mouthwash
and chew a sugar free gum, this will help.

Thanks Kerri.  I know it isn't related to my teeth or gums.  I can
actually feel the place on my tongue that tastes bad.  It's only
towards the back of the tongue.  That's why I originally thought I had
thrush because it is very specific to my tongue.

Very weird.

kerri,
That's a great guess. While you are trying to figure it out, I suggest
that you call this phone number and ask them if they can sell you some
chewing gum or products similar to CERTS that are safe to use and won't
damage your teeth over time. The number is 1-800-877-2447 or visit their
web site:
www.vrp.com
Request a free catalog. I have purchased some vitamins from them and it's
an excellent company that has some excellent products. Their free catalog
is one of the best that I have seen. I learned a lot about various
alternative medicines from the catalog.

Those medications all (or almost all) cause dry mouth.

No wonder you have an awful taste in your mouth!

You should get more frequent dental cleanings too, as dry mouth can cause
plaque build-up to increase monumentally.

Emma

PS what are you taking the various meds for?

I have chronic, severe low back pain caused by a physical therapist who
did a spinal adjustment when he shouldn't have.  I've had it for 2 1/2
years and yes, I've tried EVERYTHING (meds, exercise, chiro,
acupuncture, Reiki, epidural, facet block - I'm sure I'm forgetting
something).  Actually I thought of another possible reason for the bad
taste - I have had three series of Botox injections into my back
muscles over the past five months.  They actually seem to be helping.
It will be the first thing that has.  If that's what is causing the bad
taste then it's more than worth it.  Actually I'm not worried.  It's
more of a nuisance than a concern.

You're right about the dry mouth and teeth.  I get my teeth cleaned
every four months.

You might want to do a Google search on Botox if you don't get any posts
from people in this group that have taken Botox. You might also attempt to
find out from Google Groups whether or not there is a Botox related
newsgroup.

Actually I've don'e both.  There were a couple of people who mentioned
a bad taste in their mouth right after the shots but these were people
who had been injected in the facial area.

As for a Google Group - there is one named "Botox".  The only posting
is from someone trying to sell a "cheaper alternative".  No thanks!
The "expensive primary" is scary enough.
