Hi,
Can anybody give me a lead to find a pharmacy volunteer opportunity? I
live in Dublin, CA. I am applying for PharmD program. I called
Walgreen, Safeway, Kaiser, etc and they all told me that they do not
have any volunteer opportunities in their pharmacy. Please help. I
need to get a pharmacist' recommendation for admission requirement.
thanks so much for your help.

Did you try any hospitals, particularly a VA hospital? Since CA has
registered pharmacy technicians, a VA hospital under federal laws might be
an option. Worth a try, I guess.
Also curious- without any pharmacy experience, how sure are you that you
want to get into pharmacy? I'd seriously recommend spending some time in a
pharmacy for your own experience and not just as a means for a
recommendation. Better to know what you're getting into in advance, than
realize after a semester of pharmacy school that you're in something you
don't like.

Yes, I did try the VA hospital in Liveremore, CA, but, the coordinator
told me that they do not have the volunteer opportunity in pharamcy
there.
As you said, I am not looking for just for the sake of a
recommendation, but, I do want a REAL experience, specially since I
have a real stable job in the federal government as a computer
scientist which pays me the same (if not more than) a pharmacist
salary.

Are you comparing your present pay to an entry level pharmacist position
with the US Government? Probably a bad comparison since I know plenty of
pharmacists bringing in over $100k a year in retail.

That is about how much I am making now. As I said, health care is my
passion, I am not in for the money. I do have a BA in Molecular Cell
Biology from Berkeley and a MS in computer science.
Thanks guys. Please let me know if any pharmacist here would like to
share with me their experience and let me know if there is any way that
I can do "shadowing".

I don't understand why that prevents the poster from getting a job. Is
it extremely difficult to get registered? Does it require special
training?

You may also want to try independent pharmacies. You'll probably have a
better experience there than a big chain.

WHY do you want to volunteer?
Why don't you get a job?
Pharmacy tech jobs are not terribly difficult to find.

PGU's in California, where pharmacy techs need to be registered with the
state. I'd think there would be a volunteer opportunity somewhere as a
pharmacy aide or something.
