Prevacid Side effects

I have been on Prevacid for about the last 5 years with what I thought
was with no side effects. In mid July, I broke out with a mysterious
thrush infection in my mouth.I found out through this newsgroup that
this can be caused by prevacid. Then my lips and tongue started to
swell and became painful. I was given meds to clear this up. The
thrush left, but my lips and tongue were still swollen and sore.
Through the process of elimination, the doctor said I was allergic to
either the blood pressure meds I was taking or the prevacid. It turned
out to be the prevacid. I tried the prilosec, and got the same side
effects but to a much less intensity. I am now on ranitidine to manage
the GERD and acid reflux. I have been off the prevacid for 4 days. Has
anyone else had any of these side effects? How long does it take to
get rid of the side effects totally? My lips are almost normal, but
get very dry, and the tip of my tongue is still slightly tender.
Thanks for any information you can give me. I wish I would have found
this group much sooner!!

I could be wrong, but I think it is EXTREMELY uncommon to be on something
with no problem for 5 years and then suddenly develop severe side
effects due to
being allergic to the drug that caused no problems for 5 years.  Perhaps
someone
could confirm this or disagree (I'm not a health care professional).
However,
usually (perhaps not always, I'm not sure), if one is allergic to a drug
(or food),
etc... it becomes immediately apparent and rarely does one take it
rgularly for
5 years and suddenly develop serious symptoms (at least in my experience and
those I've known that are allergic to a drug/food...

Hope this helps, Jacob
