I've been having trouble maintaining a normal sleeping pattern...i.e.
I've been falling asleep around 4am and getting up around 11am. Then a
2 hour nap in the late afternoon.
So I figured I would take an ambien to help me sleep.

Got into bed around 12, couldnt fall asleep, so I took one at 12:58am,
read an article, didnt feel sleepy, so I figured I should turn off the
light and lie down, to see if it will hit me then.

Turn off the lights around 1:10am, layed there until 1:33am, and then
got up and booted up my computer.

This sucks, its 1:45 now, its been almost an hour, when is this pill
supposed to take effect?

I rarely take medication, so I figure this should hit me quick.

But it is now 2:37, almost 2 hours later, and I still feel fine.

I do not drink coffee or tea, I drank a Dr. Pepper around 3pm, water
after that.

I would like to be able to switch my sleep pattern back to: 1am to
7/8am.

I heard some people do not get good results from Ambien, so they tried
sonata/sonoroa?
Or maybe I should try valerian root, or melatonin?

Daytime sleepiness is a common sign of a sleep disorder.

Sleep disorders can cause sleep fragmentation upwards of hundreds of times
per night.

You could have a sleep movement disorder (such as restless leg), a
sleep maintenance disorder, or sleep apnea. (You know when they say "he
died in his sleep?"  -- that can be from sleep apnea.)

I bet you also have irritability, daytime sleepiness, low mood, low
energy, and reduced concentration ability. These are all signs that you
may have repeated awakenings.

You don't need more, or different, drugs. (Which tend to worsen sleep
disorders, suppress breathing ability/increase airway collapsing,
BTW!!!)

You need true investigation.

Ask your doctor for a sleep study ("polysomnography").

I suffer from depression/anxiety, as well as Restless Legs
Syndrome. To say the least, I have well documented problems
of trying to get to sleep, staying asleep, and getting
enough sleep.

I have tried Ambien and it did nothing at all for me.

I take two, (1.0 mg) Xanax per day (evening and night) so it
will help relax me (worry) and I fall asleep with no problems.

I have been on Xanax for quite a while and have never need
"more" in order for it to work. In other words, I don't
have an addictive type personality, and if you do, be careful
what type(s) of medicines you use.

Good Luck.
