I know that I have high blood pressure but am not sure of the reason. I
recently saw a list of the possible causes of high blood pressure and
Polycystic Kidney was on the list. I am going to my doctor in about two
weeks and will ask her to test me to determine whether or not I have
polycystic kidneys. I know a little bit about it. I just wanted to know if
there are any medications designed to treat the problem or even make it go
away. I am 54 years old. I already take a satin medication (for chol.) and
a ace inhibitor (for B.P.). Any help would be appreciated.

Why do you suspect you have polycystic kidneys? Most instances of
hypertension is idiopathic (as is not immediately linked to another
condition). In any case polycystic kidneys is almost always inherited so
unless you have obvious family history it will be quite unlikely. If you're
interested, you should check out the polycystic kidneys disease foundation:

Gregory,
Thanks for the information. I'll bookmark the site. My doctor told me that
in most cases, it's impossible to determine why a person has high blood
pressure. She said that in most cases--it's caused by atherosclerosis.
However, I don't think that is my problem since my chol. reading in my
most recent blood test was below normal. I seem to recall that at least
one doctor in a magazine article said that there is always a reason for a
person having high blood pressure but it's not always easy or possible to
locate or trace down the reason that a person has high blood pressure. I'm
just trying to find the reason. While I was reading about Polycystic
Kidney disease--it mentioned that one symptom is a problem with
fingernails. One of fingernails is split and my brother has little white
spots on his fingernails.
