Hello- I was wondering if you guys could offer some advice on which
programs (pharmacy) would be best. I'm looking at applying to
traditional programs (4yrs), however there are also 3year programs and
even one 2 2/3yrs. program at UOP! Getting out in approx. 2.5yrs seems
really appealing, but what about employment potential? Does the school
name matter? A UC school vs little South University?
Your thoughts?.....Thanks!

I hired many Pharmacists over the years and honestly did not have to
Fire many.... \
BUT in both cases my actions were never..not a single time...ever
influenced by which Pharmacy School these Pharmacists graduated
from... Nor were their grades taken into account...
A good personality, the ability to work with others, and the ability
to keep the customers happy were major concerns... The only thing
that I really could not stand in a Pharmacist was an extremely slow
Pharmacist... kind of hard to define "extremely" but I know "slow"
when I see it...
IIF you do decide on Pharmacy I hope you have a career that
was as enjoyable as mine was... Its the People not the pills that
count... and money in the cash register helps a lot also...

Hello Bob, Wow, thanks for the advice! Yes, I've been contemplating on
pharmacy for a while now and it seems like there are many more
pharmacists that are happy with their career chioce than those that are
not.

Have you ever worked in a pharmacy? I would suggest you spend 6 months
to a year as a tech before jumping into a pharmacy college. It is a
very stressful profession so you need to be the right type of person
to survive in pharmacy. As many of us hate our work as enjoy it.
At this time, there are many opportunities. Whether that chages over
the next 10 years is anyone's guess--it's like forecasting the
weather.
I would stay away from the 3 year programs; I can think of two
students who could not cut them. They were sharp and started with high
GPAs, but fell low by the 1st semester of the second year. That put
them out the door.BTW: What is UOPI?
From my experience, after you're licensed the prospective employers
couldn't care less where you graduated from. The ability to do the
job with great detail under stressful conditions carries the weight.
I work in Ohio but plan to move to the Rio Grande valley in Texas.
Last week, I interviewed with several pharmacies. All but one store
offered me something. The techs are certified down there so they can
do certain tasks that a pharmacist needs to do in OH. As an example,
they can take a call in rx as long as it is a refill, etc.
I wish you the best, but I'd toe test the water before jumping in.
